View Full Version : Projects...how I love thee

Simply put, I love doing projects. Just making shit do stuff that maybe it wasn't designed for.
So I've been working on a stereo computer.
My vision initially was to take some of my spare pc equipment, run it to a custom box make it look like another amp in my setup and run that to a touch screen monitor (did get one, thanks ragar :D ). That would have worked pretty well I would imagine. But doing a bit of research on it, this would have taken more money than I wanted to spend (custom box alone was going to be around 75 bucks) then time etc etc....well here I remember I have a tablet pc under the bed that isn't being used (hrmmm deja vu', I may have posted some of this somewhere else) it had some issues and we just said "fuck it" and threw it aside. Well I bought a new power brick, and i'm having an unmountable boot volume issue currently, but I'm running the recovery console in XP cd and should be up soon.
So now I'm going to go from Tablet to USB Dac (went with creative as I had a gift card to best buy) so total cost right now is 20 for the brick and 40 for the dac. I was looking at 175 for the other route.
I'm going to install the app that **going to have to look and see who recommended it, thinking Neil** posted and then just have it mapped to the server. So, I will mostly still listen to cd's but if I want to listen to something from my collection, it is just a tap away.
Yeah....long ass typing, sorry...i'm amped up AND I type fast...evil combo. Pics (nothing too exciting)
P.S. I love projects! I love seeing what everyone is building and doing and taking feedback well...so post up your mothafuking projects so I can steal ideas from you creative motherfuckers.

I've got a bit to do, but I'll show the final results once I get it put in its final spot....just bored while its running chkdsk.

When it originally died, i thought perhaps something internally was damaged so I ripped it apart, well I didn't reconnect the keyboard mouse. I think the keyboard cable is bad...which is why its laying on the couch ;)
Just leaving the externals exposed as this will not be moved around.

I have that same compaq keyboard. Haha. I use a Logitech one. It's dope. Controls my WinAmp and has a calculator / sleep button.
My projects ATM aren't really that intense. I'm making lunar lights for my brother's tank, trying to find CAT-5 female connectors to do that CAT-5 to S-video/RCA sound thing I talked about.
And I'm throwing around the idea of a bi-powered (solar / battery) RCA car.
I also have 2 other projects that I'm researching on. One has to do with FM radio waves and the other has to do with sensory switches.

And that is all for now on this one. Sound is actually pretty good. Of course not as good as from a cd player, but I do have it at max everything 24-bit 96hz.
On to building a glass flower box OR a glass water wall. Still deciding.

Have a downstairs bathroom that is our utility bathroom. It has the washer and dryer. But does also have shower and toilet. Ripped everything out tonight, started patching holes and we are installing a vessel sink, doing some new paint and replacing some plum****. Pictures to follow later.

They can come as complete sets, but it is much more crunk to make your own combo. A lot outside of contractors grade material is sold individually.

Works really well. Reds are night and day different from the premium plus line. Vibrant yellows, blues, and greens are still somewhat of an issue, but now the troublesome ones have their own primer coat color so it makes it a whole lot easier. (Primer coat color basically being a toned down version of the top coat, but deeper than a tinted primer typically would be able to be due to using a medium base and having less white pigment i.e. titanium dioxide.)
I have heard really good things about the Keller Williams paint by the way. Just never had a chance to use it as there aren't any vendors around me.

Keller Williams is the shit around here. Everyone scoffs at Behr, especially for exterior house paint. Behr lasts 5 years, Keller Williams will last 10-15. My folks have used both, and KW held up better outside, so we'll be sticking to that for the exterior stuff.
We are going to be doing some interior painting soon, and I think I will try that new Behr stuff with teh primer in it, just for shits and giggles. If it doesn't work well, I'll just go back to KW.

The problem is that this double wide uses RV size and style sinks and shit. Not to mention the whole thing is done with shitty Qest plastic piping. They had a recall on that shit because it sucked so bad. I really think I'd be better off saving up for a stick built house in the next 5-10 years, and not doing anything more to this shit hole other than paint and wall deco.

Shouldn't be a problem as it likely uses yellow oxide.
These are issues with most paints, btw. They all use pretty much the same colorants. Behr and some other brands use automotive colorants in their premium lines which helps quite a bit.

Yeah, that doesn't surprise me. Exterior paint success can vary tremendously from region to region due to the climate. Different formulations hold up better under certain conditions.

Yeah, that doesn't surprise me. Exterior paint success can vary tremendously from region to region due to the climate. Different formulations hold up better under certain conditions.

Yes! Keller Williams has been in this region for forever and a day, and they have their exterior paint down to a science. I should also mention that when we painted this place, they had a huge sale going on, so that had some say in it as well. Besides, my old man knows his shit when it comes to this, as I've finally learned that I don't know everything and it pays to listen to him.
Now, Mr. Paint Master, a question. This place came with pre-covered sheetrock. In other words, it has wallpaper on it. I've used Killz Primer on all the rooms that I've painted to seal that shit up. However, I still have 2 bathrooms and the master bedroom to paint. Do you think I'll need to prime those rooms before I use that cool Behr shit?

Shouldn't be a problem as it likely uses yellow oxide.
These are issues with most paints, btw. They all use pretty much the same colorants. Behr and some other brands use automotive colorants in their premium lines which helps quite a bit.
Yea but your a paint pimp so I promote you to my paint expert.

It took a lot of research. When i started i worked under a guy who had just been promoted and moved to that dpt. so i had to look elsewhere for knowledge.
I've assembled a lot of knowledge from piecing things together as well as trial and error. The people who work under me probably know a lot more about paint then they would like to haha.
Generally if i have a job, no matter what i'm doing, i do as much outside research as i possibly can to be the best and most knowledgeable. It's just a drive i have. I would imagine you can relate.

Yeah, the region thing is a theory really. But from reading the different contractor forms you hear people from different areas saying this paint is the shit, and that brand doesn't hold up for shit. Its generally the same brands in the same regions that either fail or do very well. For whatever reason they haven't figured that out yet and continue to argue. I've experienced it first hand from people who have moved from such and such place and had bad experiences with 'this behr shit'.
By the way, i am by no means saying behr is the best paint on the market. For the DIYer though, i dont think there is a better bang for your buck paint. Yes, you can get BM Aura and i have no doubt that you will be very satisfied, its an excellent paint (although it does dry fast and can leave lap marks if you're not careful), but you're going to be paying 60 a gallon. I also regularly send people to SW when i feel they may have a product that would do better for the customer. It's much better to hand them off and have them have a successful project then walk them into product failure and damage the behr and hd brand name.
With that said, over wallpaper you should always use either an oil based or shellac/xylene base primer.(although the xylene base primers are rare, porter is the only brand i know of that sells anything like that). Reason being is that water based product may activate the adhesives in the wallpaper causing it to bubble.
So no, i would stick to using oil based Kilz. (although you're probably referring to kilz 2, if you are and haven't had any problems you'll most likely be fine using the Ultra, but i would advice you still use oil base.) BTW, the extra 7 bucks for the Kilz Odorless is well worth the money.

Let me know what colors and i'll give you any advice you need as far as application goes.
Remember, you can use colors from the old behr pallet, or the new behr pallet. Although the new colors are formulated to hide better and use the new high-hide colorants. As to where the old colors/formulas only have the new colorants in them a part of the time, and thats rare.

So short project here but a friend at work...i really hate that term (work associate) cause honestly I've never talked to the guy in 8 years other than "hey there"....wow, okay...back on track....he has a laptop that has a bad power port and the brick went bad too. So I really don't want to deal with this, i'm swamped at work have classes coming up and trying to enjoy a bit of summer....of course he gets me because I know he wouldn't know to say this but brings up "well this isn't for me, I already bought my wife a new laptop about 3 months ago...my 12 year-old grand-daughter wanted a laptop."
So I can't say no. So I do some DMM work on the brick, its holding the voltage but amps are all over the place. So we replace that. With a bit of wiggling it does actually power up and loads the laptop.
That isn't going to work. So the options are media cable (which allows for power from the media port, a docking station or I do a full tear down.
I tell him that I've never taken this model that far apart and it will be risky. He just says that if it ends up broke, it was already like that LOL.

Honestly, i'd do it myself. Depending on what you're using, may be best to just use a 2.5gal pump sprayer. The thin stuff (like behr) goes all over the place if you use a paint sprayer. The most important thing is to backroll or back brush to make sure the product is worked in evenly, avoid doing it in direct sunlight, and make sure not to let the product pool as it will create a film and over time that film will peel.
I know cabbots (sp) is a great stain/sealer too, however i've never used it. I believe its a bit thicker. Flood also makes a great product. Thats what they use on texas roadhouse, etc.

I just painted the outside of my house few weeks ago with that new Behr Ultra Premium with the primer. I didnt notice any issues with it. I guess the only way to tell is over time.

While I understand that. Usually people not into real quality and use Ipods routinely, these Alpine media decks are much slicker in controlling an Ipod than any of the Ipod ready decks. The navigation through the menus is so nice.

The reason I want to change my deck is that faceplate is starting to be a bitch. I don't know if it's the actual face, or the connections, but it's starting to not light up and display all the time. I'm running a single 10 on 525 watts. That's not RMS though, that's peak I believe. I had it on a 30 amp fuse and it never popped, so it doesn't draw that much. However, even when I had it in my truck I could see my volt meter wiggle and my headlights dim if I cranked it up and the bass hit.
It'll handle it. To minimize voltage drops, do the big three. You could also put in a second battery in trunk by the amp to help even more.

Yeah, I was trying to do without having to buy another battery or a cap. I'm all for remoting one in the trunk or squeezing a larger CCA one under the hood, but that will have to wait as funds are tight. I will just be transplanting the sub and amp out of my truck into my car.
A good cap costs as much as another 400 CCA battery or a larger Optima anyways.

Caps are garbage. You were being trolled on that.
Even without the battery in back you will be fine. Do the big three under the hood though. With headlights on you will get dimming from voltage drops, but you aren't running that much power so it shouldn't kill your alt.
