Apparently its not as easy as I thought. I thought it would be plug and play. It looks like it may not be. I also may be panicking for nothing as I dont have the xbox yet but I ordered it last night for this reason only and if it doesnt work Ill just sell it again.
How do you do it?
Looks like it might read FAT32 but not NTFS?
My EHDD is NTFS. A 250gb SimpleTech. And loaded with movies. If it has to be changed, can it be done with movies on it or does it have to be empty? How? Tutorial?

through my readings, it looks like it CAN read fat32 but not NTFS. So my question earlier stands..
Can I reformat the drive with the movies on it, or must I move them first? Probably should just buy another?
I just plug my external hard drive in through the usb port and then watch movies :fyi:
I'm not sure what you're getting at since im not a super computer person.

You have to move them first. Formatting will wipe the drive.

Yeah move them to your main drive or burn them to DVD then format and copy them back.

If your drive is formatted in NTFS, and it can only read FAT32, you have to format to FAT32, however, formatting wipes the drive. The con: you lose all your movies. The pro: you get to watch moviez on your Xbox after that.

This.
The maximum USB 2.0 speed IIRC is like.. 40 MBPS maximum, but most of the time averages between 30-35, in my experience with it. It also depends on how many resources your computer has, and how many you devote to transferring.
What might be better is, if you're computer saavy enough, just install the HD in your computer, and transfer over IDE, which does 1.5GB/s.

Right click the drive, click format. Select the right file system, and have at 'er.
Once you've backed things up, of course.

that easy? Things Im reading says it doesnt work if drive is larger than 32gb and you need a special program.

Yeah, it looks like Partition Magic is the right solution for you. You'll have to partition several 32GB sized drives. I assume you know how to find free copies of it.

Oh, your on vista? and no dick suck for me :( fat32 to ntfs is an easy conversion command but you cannot go backwards.

As far as swissknife though, why not just run it in compatibility mode? Right click on it (program) properties, compatibility and then winxp

So you cannot convert to fat32 if you run vista?

No, i'm not saying that. I'm saying you can't go from ntfs to fat32 and keep the data. If you are running fat32 and want it to change to ntfs you can without having to backup your stuff.

360 will only recognize the 1st partition. I had a 40gb external, partitioned it into a 32 and an 8, only saw the 32. I believe I used partition magic and did 38, and it worked fine on the 360.
Now I use a 500gb, which oddly enough came partitioned in FAT32, which I found weird.
