Can't say I care for the La Terrible too much. It's not horrible, but not exactly my type of beer exactly.

I can taste the spices to begin with, and they're nice, but then the after taste just as I am swallowing reminds me of a green apple.

As soon as I posted that and saw it I figured someone would comment. The lotion isn't fap lotion, its foot lotion for my skanky ass crusty feet :fyi:

And I always keep napkins on my desk for a tissue/wipe up shit/ etc. I use a towel when I fap :fyi:

I went to the store the other day, got the following:

Founders - Red's rye p.a
Great Divide - Collette
Heavy seas - Small craft warning
Terrapin - Hop karma

Six pack of each of those, then got a 22 oz bottle of Rogue Chipotle ale, and a 22 oz bottle of stone sublimely self-righteous ale.

Nice selection Hoss.

Have you had Founder's Double Trouble yet, or their Centennial for that matter? Both of those are tasty. The Heavy Seas Loose Cannon is pretty tasty as well.

My most recent taste was Paulaner Salvator Double Bock. Fucking tasty cold, too much solvent alcohol as it warmed. But I'll be damned if it wasn't the best double bock I've had when it was cold. Caramel malt sweetness + slight Cascade citrus + bready finish = nom.

That Flying Mouflan is most likely getting cracked when I get home tonight.

The founders double trouble is a DAMN good DIPA. I liked that one, and loose cannon is one of my fav's that I can get in just about any store here. Great for a summer day.

The Mouflan is a good beer. Not the best barleywine I have ever had, but still good.

Before the Mouflan, I had not yet found a barleywine that I really liked. While I was up in PA, I found that one and Below Decks as two that I liked. Dont know of any others that I can really say I care for, but that might be because I havent tried many of them

If you like hoppy beers, try the Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine. Hoppiest beer I've had so far. Puts Hopslam and Double Trouble to shame.

I like hops, but I like them to be balanced out...

That is one thing I like about the mouflan, it is hopped all to hell, but not overwhelming due to the residual sugars.

Foothills brewery makes one called hoppyum, and it is good, but pretty unbalanced IMO.

w00tah
06-04-2010, 05:58 PM
Indeed, loads of caramel malt in the Mouflan. I think that brewers make the barleywines so hop heavy because they have to. Too little, and the malt kills the beer with too much sweetness. Too much, and it becomes a hop bomb that only the bravest can drink.

Kef

Oh no doubt bro, no doubt.

That was one of the things I learned about balancing beers when I started reading about homebrewing, was how to read IBU's. Before I started reading about brewing, I thought IBU was a rating of how bitter the beer was, which is not exactly the case...

Higher IBU indicates how much hops are used, but do not reflect the actual taste of the beer. Mouflan is a good example of that IMO, IBU in excess of 100, but is not completely over the top hoppy, although is slightly overhopped to be considered balanced IMO. But on the other end of things, there are pale ales that carry IBU's in the 50's and 60's that are COMPLETELY overhopped and the hops dominate over the malt/yeast taste.

It is a fine balance between the malt sugars/starches and the hops alpha bitterness.

w00tah
06-04-2010, 10:34 PM
Indeed. Hopslam is one of my favorites at 70 IBU and 10% ABV. It's well balanced for being such a high ABV and with such high alpha hops in it.

I'm going to Beverage Source or Winerak tomorrow, so we will see what I end up getting.

Kef

w00tah
06-04-2010, 10:37 PM
Also, knowing the malt bill and the amount of hops (and their alpha acid %) helps a ton to know what you are getting yourself into.

Kef

Okay, so is it even possible for me to try any of these epic beers with me not being able to get any beers above 5% ABV?

MS alcohol laws are gay.

My beer store will order beer for you if they don't have it in stock. What do I need to ask for with a 5% ABV cap?

w00tah
06-05-2010, 03:22 AM
The only sub-5% beer that I have truly liked was Stone Levitation Ale. Only 4.4% and tastes like it's 6+.

Should be pretty easy to get your hands on it.

I have 4 of the Fritz and Ken stouts in my dads wine room right now. I am SUPER curious about the imperial helles and the brewers reserve. I LOVE helles style ales, and the brewers reserve sounds awesome. I am also interested in the barleywine, but to a lesser extent.

Let me get back to you about trading the stout for a helles, I might take you up on that. Let me check and see if my store has any other varieties other than the fritz and ken though. The owner told me he had 5 cases in the back, but he wanted to hold on to them for a while, let me see if he has the other varieties, or if he is even going to get them in.

Lol. I give you that. But if they were true to the style they would. It is a Belgian style, after all.

I still say that Blanche De Chambly is better, Belgian yeast or not. I lost my taste for wheats after drinking too many Shock Top wheats. Found a store that had them mispriced for 2.99 per 6. I bought the 4 they had on the shelf.

Kef

Isnt it sort of a mix between an BIPA and an american strong ale? Or am I thinking of another Stone brew...

Either way, it is awesome, and I will be opening my 22oz of it either this saturday or next wed. This saturday I am smoking some chicken, pork tenderloin, and pork ribs, and I plan on having a Rogue Chipotle Ale with them. Hope that one is good. I also plan on going back to the beer store and getting another 5-6 6 packs of good stuff for this weekend.

Of those 6-packs, one will be Saranac's lager and lemonade. It is not a stunningly amazing brew, but in the heat of the afternoon, while floating in the lake, that sucker is DAMN good.

Cant go wrong with the classics...

Wootah, have you had the victory Yakima Twilight yet? I just polished off one :yumyum:

Also, any suggestions for some fairly common things that I might not have tried before, that I might want to be on the lookout for on my trip to the beer store tomorow? I am hoping that they have replenished the stock of Ballast Pointe Big eye IPA...

w00tah
06-16-2010, 11:46 PM
Fairly common? Sierra Nevada's Southern Hemisphere Harvest is a nice variation on an IPA. Nice citrus/spicy/floral hop flavor. Should be easy to get. Their Bigfoot is good too, especially if you are a hop hound. That's by far the hoppiest beer I've had to date. The Torpedo Extra IPA is tasty as well.

If you can get ahold of any of the Great Lakes stuff, their Burning River is a great APA, and the Edmund Fitzgerald is an amazing Porter, best I've had so far.

Founders Centennial IPA is nom, the Double Trouble is nom.

Stone Levitation is amazing for as little alcohol that's in it (4.4%), their Smoked Porter is amazingly complex.

Bell's Kalamazoo Stout is great, like a coffee stout with black licorice in it, quite good. Their Two Hearted is one of my top 5 beers.

That's a start, anyways.

Kef

We have a new bar here in town that I didn't know was here..Their "specialty" is beer on tap. Right now they have 16 beers on tap. They are getting in taps for 16 more next week and will have the second largest selection of tap beer in our state. Going to be epic.

Last night I tried some Pickaxe stuff I didn't like, Sam Adams Summer Ale which I liked, Indian Summer which was okay and another beer I forgot the name of but it was good.

I was proud to say I had tried all 16 of the ones they had on tap.

It is $3.50 for a 16oz cup. Bartender only charged us for 2 beers when I had 5 so I tipped him $7.00.

They have a "challenge" where if you can drink 12oz of each of the 16 beers in under 2 hours you get them for $1.00/each and get a t-shirt. If you fail the challenge, you pay $3 for each beer. The bartender was the only one who has completed it. lol.

I am tempted to try it but so many heavy beers I doubt I could do it. The bartender saw the way I drank last night and told me he thought I may could do it.

hoss
06-18-2010, 05:18 PM
Would not try that challenge... In NC they have laws against promoting drinking that much or that fast.

32 taps is a pretty good selection though. When I was up in PA/MA there was a bar that was opening up 120+ taps... That was pretty nuts.

We have a place opening up here in a few months that is going to have hand pumps :woot: . Can not wait for that.

Why would you not try it? 8 beers an hour is not TOO bad I don't think..Its just it being heavier beers that would make it hard IMO.

He was telling us that the last guy who tried it barfed after like beer 10. And it was still the first hour.

120+ taps is nuts.

The bartender told us he had been to place where it was $30 at the door and all you could drink. The place had like 100 taps or more too.

I can't wait to go back next week and try all the new beers.

That is faster than two hours of power hour :fyi:

I used to be able to do two hours of power hour in college, but I was the only person I knew that was able to do that... AT that point, it isnt the alcohol, you just get full, and the carbonation kills you.

I was the same way a little while ago, I guess I still am to a certain degree... I know the genre's of beer I do/dont like, and I am somewhat opposed to trying some of them. There is a tasting at Beverage Source with North Coast Brewing. I am hoping I can go. I have heard good things about their Old Rasputin RIS.

Theres a festival next month in a town about 2 hours away.

Its $30 to get in and they give you a small cup. A ton of beer vendors are there and you walk around drinking all you want, all day long.

I may go. That'd be epic.

Yes, you and the other 600 people have 4 hours to drink beer 2 oz at a time...

The one that came to my town a few months ago had 8 oz pours, or 2 oz liquor pours. And even then, it was worth the extra $15 for the VIP ticket that got you in ahead of the general crowd.

It is good if you want to go and try a lot of beers, but not good if you are looking to get drunk. Imjustsayin, $30 will go farther in a bar or grocery store if that is what you are looking for.

Yeah, so the Longshot was good, yet a little weird. Aroma was lemon, a little bit of a bready malt, and then the pepper, but it was faint. The taste, pretty much the same but the yeast came through a little, and it tasted a little like a Belgian. The weird part was the black pepper just came in out of nowhere, stayed on the palate for a couple seconds and then faded pack into the background like it was never there.

Not bad though overall, just the black pepper was a little different.

Have not seen the WTF or 13... Tonight I had a torpedo, dortmunster, and a founders centennial. The centennial was the one I couldnt remember earlier...

The dortmunsters gold was a really good lager. Will be great in the hot sun. The torpedo is damn good, I like that one a LOT. Has a lot of aromatic hops, and their torpedo dry-hopping system combined with whatever finishing hops they are adding at the end of the boil makes for a GREAT aroma and flavor. Fairly light body, but HUGE hop oil flavor. I like that one a lot. Unfortunatly, it completely overpowered the founders centennial IPA that followed it up :crap:

Kef

After drinking more of it, I am not really sold on the centennial... It is good, I wont deny it of that, but all things considered, hardly one of my favorites. It has a nose that REEKS of hops, and smells great, but they are not in the taste at all. I did find though, that as it starts to warm up the flavors really come alive, I liked it better as it approached room temperature, instead of drinking it straight out of the fridge.

w00tah
06-28-2010, 05:08 PM
Yeah Centennial is a little weird in that sense.

And for what it is worth, 90% of the beer I drink it either room temp or has been left to sit out of the fridge for at least an hour.

I dont think I could drink room temp beer when it is almost 100 degrees outside haha. Maybe at night time... But if I am drinking late into the night, I have usually moved on to swill.
And hoss, hold off on heavy hopped beers for a week or so, then try it again. It has plenty of hop flavor, when your tastebuds aren't numb from high alpha beers.

Kef

I am gonna have a hard time doing that... Haha. I could taste the hop flavor though, the more it warmed up. I know it is there, but those alphas were DEFINITLY introduced earlier in the boil for bittering, and are (at my best guess) high concentrations of low alpha hops. It is a good brew, but I just dont think I can put it that highly up on my list.

It is pretty balanced IMO, perhaps a tad on the sweeter side I would say, but definitly not a hop behemoth like many are. That nose just tricks me out, the smell is hops hops hops, but the taste is maltier.

6.5% is pretty up there to be thin, must have been a pretty active yeast or a LOT of fermentable sugars.

I tried Ruination for the first time last night. I don't see what the hype is about it, it's a good 1.5x IPA, but it's not the hop bomb everyone made it out to be. Fresh 2010 SN Bigfoot was hoppier by far, to the point that it was almost undrinkable fresh. After 4 months, it was a little bearable, but still very hoppy.

Also had a couple GLBC Blackout Stouts, and 2 GLBC Lake Erie Monsters.

I've been around, just havent drank anything new in a while haha. The SN imp helles looks/sounds killer...

I did drink one of my brewdog 5 am saints last night, that was a pretty good amber. Not the best, but definitly something that was really good. Might have my alagash dark ale tonight. I am undecided on whether or not to open it.

The 30th SN had a crazy undernote of tobacco, like natural snuff. Was a little odd, but still good.

The Alagash sounds good. I am cracking the Stone Emperial tonight. Pics later.

First one up.

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m122/deerhunt1988/flyingdogdoubleale.jpg

and WHOALY SHIT!

Definitely unlike anything I have ever had before. Of course its twice the alcohol volume we are allowed to have in our state, but you really can't tell it?

Most "flavorful" beer I have ever had.

I am a noob when it comes to ratings, but it kind of has three tastes. One when you get it in your mouth. Another when you drink it. Another one a few seconds after.

The color is pretty cool...Definitely never saw anything such a dark caramel color.

Taste is IDK how to describe. Just different. its got a lot of "BAAM" a second or so after you swallow it. I am sure wootah will tell me what exactly that is.

Its like woah, wtf. haha

I actually kinda like it.

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m122/deerhunt1988/sweetwaterroadtrip.jpg

Its a great beer. Got decent reviews. But nothing special. Best way I know to compare is to say its a step above regular domestic (I.E. Coors, Bud, Etc.) but below the Double Dog I had earlier. Tastes similar to Yuengling IMO.

I'd give it a 7/10 on my scale.

I actually had the Double Dog earlier in this thread, when I had the Canis Major sampler from Flying Dog. It is a good beer. What temp did you drink it? It changes a good deal as it warms, the malt comes out in it. The "tastes" are probably the flavoring hops, which range from pure bitter, to citrus, to floral, to piney, to oily and so on. The most commonly used dual purpose hop is Cascade, which gives a strong citrus/orange aroma and flavor. It can also taste similar to a grapefruit.

The Double Dog does have a pretty unique flavor for being what it is. Not like any IPA or DIPA I have had.

If you can find any of their stuff, Founders makes some seriously good beer. Their Double Trouble is a fantastic DIPA, their Centennial is an easy intro to IPAs, their Porter is very tasty, the Breakfast Stout is phenomenal, and the Dirty Bastard is fucking noms. Think scotch whisky flavors in a beer. Really easy to drink and really good. Also like almost 9% as well.

If you want to get technical, it's a DAPA. It's not an IPA to begin with, it's an imperialized version of their Doggie Style Pale Ale, if you will.

Going to try the Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA here in a little bit when my friend Z shows up. Hopefully it lives up to the hype. A LOT of people say it's a great IPA.

From left to right, Brewery Ommegang Hennepin goblet, Sierra Nevada Torpedo, Great Divide Hercules DIPA (which I am drinking as I write this, and it is very tasty), Breckenridge Small Batch 471 IPA, 21st Amendment Back In Black IPA, Founder's Dirty Bastard Scotch Ale, Founder's Cerise Cherry Ale, and Lagunitas Hop Stoopid. The Cerise is my first drain pour in about 6 months. It was bad. In all honesty, I was hoping for it being mediocre, but it turned out like absolute garbage.

Bear republic red rocket ale
Great Divide Titan IPA

All are excellent, my favorite is probably the Indian brown, followed by the comodore perry.

I have been around... Actually workink part time at a wine/beer warehouse store right now...

I saw the picture, I am very excited about it :) . I have had the Hercules, on cask. That is a really good one, I am pleased with the titan as well, another great offering from GDBC. The Indian brown is probably my favorite out of this batch, it is a really good brown, great malty backbone with chcolate and hazelnut flavors, but really well balanced with hops both on the bittering and aroma side. The sweetwater motorboat is really good too, also pretty malty with some dark malt sugars, but very generously hopped.

The new censoring is stupid, thought I would put that out there.

Just opened up a bottle of brew dog punk IPA.

It is a good IPA, I am liking it, especially the nose on this thing :) . But there are a combination of two things that I am not digging about it... It is clearly VERY high in protein, and IMO slightly over carbonated. Not that those are ruining it for me, I think they did that combo on purpose to keep the aroma flowing, but it makes it a little difficult to pour and drink haha.

Also picked up some bombers of BD chaos theory, and GDBC's 16th anniversary barrel aged IPA :nom:

I will say that after the BD punk, this GDBC Titan seems a lot less desirable... Still good, but not nearly as good as I thought it was a few days ago haha.

What do those Chaos Theory sell for?

I am drinking a Founders Breakfast Stout right at this moment. It's fairly tasty :)

Noice. I will have to include a couple Ohio onlys with that growler. Speaking of which, might be able to get that growler for you this weekend. I will let you know later this week.

Sweet, let me know and I will run and grab you a growler too :) .

I drank the Chaos Theory last night, that was the first beer from brew dog that I was a little dissapointed with... Was not really bad, just was not that great. I would not buy it again...

No, but we sell it at work. It has been a long time since I have wanted a stout.

It is a porter. I will send one along with a Columbus IPA.

I'll let you know if I can send it this week on Friday when I get my paycheck.
