View Full Version : So I just got my A+ book

Possibly having to look for a job I figured I would go for my A+, however the new version I just got from Amazon is over 1000 pages and my old book from 2003 is only 300 pages :crap:
Any A+ techs out there that can tell me what the deal is, we used to just have a hardware and an OS test now I guess there are four tests total.
Anyone out there take the old and the new test? After skimming through my old one and taking some of the old practice tests I had on CD from school I was fairly confident I would be able to go for this in a few weeks but it seems it is going to be more of a project now.
I am doing Network+ and Security+ after this so I am hoping to bang this out asap.

Yes when I was in school in 99 I was going to take it but got a job before and never went for the test.
It was pretty straightforward back then if you were familiar with basic PC repair and working with windows 98.

I'm going to be taking the test in the next couple of months too...I didn't know there were 4 test. :crap:
Do you know what the other two parts are? I thought it was just hardware and software basically.

Actually the old one is still bigger than the one I had before, I am thinking it was probably from 99-00 that one came out in 03.
Oh well going to jump into it tomorrow, usually the dummies books are right up my alley so I am hoping this will not dissapoint.

Good luck.
My job has me taking a class for it now. I'm going to take the second part of the class this summer and then the test. It sucks that I have to take the time to do it all but My job is paying for the classesand then the test so I can't complain too much.

A+ is good, but have you considered MCSE? Any particular reason for going A+? I never personally took the A+ cert but my buddy did and passed. He had some problems with the wires on particular cables and what their functions were (who the hell needs that anyways, just replace the damn wire) but really wasn't horribly difficult other than that.

Basically I am getting it for my resume, I do not have a degree and notice a lot of jobs asking for either a degree or A+ in addition to experience.
A+ is like anything else (including MCSE) where most of the people out there read the book, passed the test and still don't know shit about PC repair whereas I have been doing it a long long time and have a lot of troubleshooting experience etc but just want the piece of paper for employment purposes.
I took a class at BU for PC Repair and had planned on getting it a few weeks later and like I said became employed and just never bothered as I had no need.
As for MCSE I actually did start and got MCP and really just got bored with it and started looking into Linux and worked more on learning the administration aspect of that.. being a windows domain admin is not something I think I would really enjoy.
I have been pondering a few IT areas the past few years including Linux Admin, CSS/HTML Programmer, AS/400 Programmer, CCNA and a few other things so yeah I am all over the place
I enjoy them all but never really figured out what I would enjoy most if it was part of my employment. With the recent job shakeup I think I have realized I need to build myself up a little bit beyond the level 1 IT tech looking to get his foot in the door I was 10 years ago and make sure I have a but better skillset.

Closing stores, laying people off and possibly filing chap 11 and so on.. I have become very comfortable in this job being pretty much without a boss to look over my shoulder and being able to do as I please including daily 3+ hour naps and a mon-tue-wed workweek.
fuck you
I love you

Yeah well 10:30am - 11:30pm so 39 hours :)
Shit is nice lovely during the summer, to me it has made it worth taking a little less take home a week and having 4 days a week off.
I do work for a place that sells stuff though.

There is another guy out in your area who monitors all the west coast in a different datacenter.

Ah, gotcha. AS/400 will get you a good amount of gigs in the manufacturing and most industrial segments. If you ever work in this area and feel to be doing well, let me know. I have some contacts all over the place through Kraft and Sheinkers that can always use AS/400, Matrix etc.
With what you are currently doing, and your obvious network knowledge, you should really consider CCNA. Yes, more expensive than any of the others you mentioned, also takes the most time. But the rewards are much higher. CCNA can't be your foundation, you really need to move a few more levels up. But if you really understand networking, this is the best role (imo). Get to CCIE and you write your own ticket anywhere.

Thanks man, yeah AS/400 is extremely foreign territory to me but when we fired our IT director he gave me a shitload of CBT classes from this place.
Just not sure if it is something I should even try to jump right into.

When I took the A+ it was two tests and my book by that Mike Myers guy was around 1200 pages. I also got my Net+. What I got out of it though wasn't a whole lot other then it probally helped me get a job. Its a good place to start out but if you really want to make money get your MCSE (although the 2008 is not called that anymore) or cisco certs. My problem with the A+ was it tought me so much old shit I will never use and it tested me on it. I dont fucking care about Interupts or windows 3.11. If I ever have to deal with that shit then im working in the wrong place.... ohh wait we have some windows 3.11 machines where i work.... fuck!!!!
Sumerized. A+ aint worth much but its a good place to start... especialy if you dont know shit, but you need to get a higher level cert to make some cash.
or you could always move to india and be a programer. You dont have to know much to do that, just ask on all the boards for help because you dont know shit...
