View Full Version : My new Home Theatre set up.

I have been piecing this together for a little while now and it has changed a couple of times. The equipment is a Samsung A550 46 '' lcd. PS3, Pioneers new VSX-1019H, Direct tv hr22 hd/dvr box, and my favorite the Logitech Harmony one remote. The speakers are AV123 X-SLS encore towers with X-CS center and surrounds. The sub is on its way from svs which is a PB-NSD 10. I am no means an audiophile and wanted to keep total cost to around 2000 grand for all equipment. I was able to come in with a total of 2200 with mounts and stands included. Now the pics I know the wiring is messy but its going to get cleaned up.

I love them I can't believe they are selling them this cheap it just does not seem possible. There is like a thousand threads about them on the avs forums and you will not find a bad review on them anywhere. They have the best customer service you have ever seen also, one of my surrounds had a blemish and I called them yesterday they sent my new surround overnight with return shipping label for the blemished one.

How much did the classics run? I didn't see them on the website?

The center also works as a MTM in 2 channel...and a fair price. I was looking at Moho vs. black though.

My guess would be that it keeps vibrations in the room down caused by the towers. Kind of like deadening a door

added some new equipment to the set up and lowered the tv as much as possible. The mac mini and a 2 tb harddrive that is identical to it for media storage. Shows how I hid the wires also just now need to make a box of some sort to hide all the power wires. Also the modem on top to feed internet to all the components seperate from my house network. and cool wall mounts for the surrounds which are actually book shelves.

thanks, I want to do so much more but this is a military house and I don't want to fix much before I move out. I am currently looking for a house and the install in that will be amazing. If anybody want to do a htpc I would recommend this mac mini. I got it for $450 for the baseline model added 4 gb ram for 50 and thats it. Has wireless n, bluetooth, optical audio. only downfall is no blu ray support as of yet. Application called PLEX is the best one out for home theatre.

yes streaming also. Plex has an app store kinda like the iphone but with lots of cool things. For instance it has a netflix and hulu apps, and they both stream in hd. it also has stuff like mtv music videos where it has the whole mtv catalog of music videos to stream. Also on the mac, running handbrake and vlc player I can rip, encode, and break any dvd/file. Plus since you have the iphone you cvan use that as a controller for the whole system also, you can have your desktop on the iphone and rowmote app controls plex.

I think you just sold me on it.

I would use the HTPC for all of that media and then run it through my reciever for amplification?

Could I route all of my sources through the mac mini? Like my Xbox, PS3, cable box? Or would I still use my reciever to switch those sources and use the HTPC for the streaming content?

reciever to switch between sources. it really is cool and completely quiet which is the biggest set back when building a powerful windows based htpc. the size of it is crzy also just 6''x 2.5''.

Could I not use the iphone as a BT keyboard? Did you just buy the base model mini mac and upgrade the ram? Is the processor speed going to be an issue in anything? I am looking at older used MM's on CL... I know I can upgrade the ram for cheap, and buy an external storage solution like you did, just questionable about the processor...

The more I keep thinking about this, the more I am really wanting it hehe. Would be kickass to be able to rip DVD's and download movies straight to the HTPC, not to mention have it for all my MP3's, so I wouldnt have to worry about my PS3 lagging like hell when I try streaming to it.

nope the processor speed is fine as long as its the intel based one of 1.83 or better. Honestly the is super fast. And start up is an amazing 13 seconds. yea I am with you I was play on and tversity on my ps3 and it lagged and the video quality was shit. I would honestly get the early 09 mac mini which is the 2 gig processor. I am not sure maybe deman or plyer can tell you but I think macs run a little different on the processor than pcs

you could fix up a pc yes, but adding all the features of the mac would end up costing you more maybe, I mean bluetooth and a built in wireless n card would be close to 200 dollars alone. Oh and since you have a ps3 you can use the remote control for emulators. I have every n64 game made on mine. and also as cool as media center is plex on the macs is the best thing since slice bread.

My desky already has wireless G in it, and I only have a wireless G router currently. I also havea BT dongle in the back of the desky, so it would already be equipped with those options. I think I just need some more research on it, I am on a strict budget right now.

I am just looking at all the options, and was wondering if the mac was really that much better suited than a PC or if I could use my PC with as much success.

see you already have more stuff than I did, when I was gonna build my htpc is was going to run me about 900. I read on the avs forum for over a month and everyone was recommending the mac mini because of price and features. and everyone's complaint about pc's was the noise and heat they put out in a av cabinet/rack

Hmmmm, well I know I need ram, and I looked around this morning and it looks like 4 gigs would cost me about $100, I dont know if I would need any other hardware upgrades or not...

If I got a used mac mini it would cost about $350-450, plus ~$60 for ram...

Hmmmm, well I know I need ram, and I looked around this morning and it looks like 4 gigs would cost me about $100, I dont know if I would need any other hardware upgrades or not...

If I got a used mac mini it would cost about $350-450, plus ~$60 for ram...

I ran mine with 1gig for over 2 months no problems just upgraded just in case. I got the 4gb ram from new egg for 28 bucks plus shipping let me find a link.

Then I just need some ram, and some cables...

Well after some sort of power surge claimed my reciever and satellite box had to replace. Went with Onkyo SR607 which is capable of 9.2 surround with 6 HDMI ports. Also check out what 12 bucks worth of stickers can do to make the mac mini blend in better with the rest of the equipment. After calibrating reciever it has totally different sound from the Pioneer 1019.
