Why do they sterilize the needle when preparing someone for lethal injection?

I believe this has more to do with the interaction of the chemical to the body than it does with the needle being clean for the person. The thought process would be that if someone were to apply a chemical to the needle that interacts, the person could possibly survive (even look as though they were dead or coma, etc). By sterilizing the needle, it eliminates that possibility.
