i have a hard time believing that shit. considering how switches and relays work, i dont see how an open circuit can cause any electrical use.

LCD and Plasma tv's consume power even when they are "turned off". You have to unplug them or flip their surge protector off to keep them from draining power.

Maybe it is because my house is ~1,200 sqft and ya'll live in mansions?

what does staged power mean? if you got an open circuit, you get power up to the point of the open. if you dont complete a circuit you cant use electricity it just sits there just like it just sits there in the socket when nothing is plugged in. now computers (you can see them stay active if you remove the side of a computer case, they got all types of lights and shit inside), phone chargers (im sure, they complete a circuit and just wait for the phone to attach to it to send that power to the phone instead of just running through the charger, just a guess), a tv, which has to keep memory for programming and the like, and things like that i could see. but something with a switch, its hard for me to believe it.

even then, lets do some simple math. in cali its like $.20 a kilowatt or some shit. lets just say you waste 1000w a day from this (no way, but lets shoot high). thats $6.20 money out of pocket for the month. id rather just not deal with having to unplug/replug shit everytime i want to use it to save $6. and assuming you dont live in cali, your kilowatt/hr rate is probably in the low to mid teens, which means its not even $6 a month. hell, if you unplug and replug everytime you'll end up wearing out the wall socket and have to replace that because nothing stays plugged in (ie, this POS condo im in), so thats offset to the slightest degree as well lol

i think my highest electrical bill was $320 out of a 1 bedroom apartment here in cali.

oh, and the last thing i bought is a inner clutch hub for my motorcycle...since i fucking broke it this morning

$0.20 a day x 31 days = $6.20

Company Makes Money from Deadly Urban Trend: "Sipping Syrup"

You've probably heard the phrase "sippin syrup," used in reference to the act of mixing cough syrup, codeine, and soda together to create a relaxed feeling within the person who consumes the beverage. The "drank" has become quite popular, particularly in the south, as rappers have done their jobs of giving free promotion to an illegal product that has managed to make teenagers even less productive than many of them already are.

It was only a matter of time before corporate America stepped in to make money off the trend. Meet the new drink on store shelves: Sippin Syrup. The drink doesn't use any illegal products, but produces the same "lean" effect that many young people seek from the cough syrup product on the street. Harmless enough, right? Not so fast.

Officers in the Houston area are concerned that the product sold on store shelves is nothing more than a gateway to an incredibly dangerous and addictive drug. The snazzy ad campaign fully leverages the power of the brand of "purple stuff" being sold on the streets already. Teenagers who can't get the real stuff would likely be enticed by the substitute until the door is open for the actual product.

I spoke with Dr. Elaina George, a prominent physician out of Atlanta, about the dangers of seemingly harmless purple "drank" used by many teenagers across the country after watching Lil Wayne videos (and those of other artists who promote the cough syrup mixture being sold illegally). Here is what she had to say about the symptoms:

"Short-term symptoms include Impaired judgment, nausea, loss of coordination, headache, vomiting, loss of consciousness, numbness of fingers and toes, abdominal pain, irregular heartbeat, aches, seizures, panic attacks, psychosis, euphoria, cold flashes, dizziness, and diarrhea."

Oh, I forgot to mention, the symptoms mentioned above are assuming your child doesn't become addicted. Here are the long-term symptoms in the advent of addiction:

"Restlessness, insomnia, high-blood pressure, coma, or even death."

I understand capitalist models and can almost appreciate the logic that leads companies to find even more ways to exploit ridiculous behavior in the black community. We are an intelligent and enlightened people, even if everyone can't see the light. But there is also the question regarding whether or not there should be regulations in place to stop companies from so blatantly utilizing an unhealthy trend to make a profit. What if my company went to Montana, where Crystal Meth is a serious problem and started to sell a product called "Meth Lite"? How fast would the Montana state legislature put me out of business?

When it comes to "Sippin Syrup," "drinking drank" and getting the "purple stuff," the bottom line is this: Companies should not be allowed to accelerate teen drug abuse and rappers should be conscientious enough to stop giving this drug free promotion. Teenagers are sheep who follow the examples which already exist in their culture. If we are making the bed for them, then who do we blame when they choose to sleep in it? The new drink in stores called "Sippin Syrup" needs to be taken off the market NOW.

Good read here

http://www.chuckegg.com/does-my-car-really-need-premium-gas-octane/
Octane – or octane rating – is how much fuel can be compressed before it spontaneously ignites rather than waiting around for the spark plug, when it should ignite. When compressed gas ignites on its own it causes the dreaded knocking and pinging that so many car owners complain to their mechanics about and that, over time, can cause serious (read: expensive) damage to your engine. The lower the octane rating, the less compression the fuel can handle before it self-ignites and the greater the chance of engine damage.

So how do you know if you really need the economy or the ultra premium? It used to be – and many say it still is – simple. Tom and Ray Magliozzi of the syndicated radio show and website Click & Clack Talk Cars, offered their succinct advice: “Use the manufacturer’s recommendation for octane. No more, and no less. Lower octane can cause pinging and overheating, which can damage the engine. And higher-than-required octane is simply a waste of money.”

Higher octane burns at higher temps, higher temps can harm the engine if it is not designed for it. And lots of newer cars have phenolic material (plastic) intakes that are designed to keep temps cooler, the higher temps are not good for them...

Motors with high compression ratios need the octane to retard the combustion, and the motors are designed to deal with this extra heat. Your average motor is designed to run cooler, more heat is just going to lead to extra wear. A few tanks here and there on higher mileage cars to help burn off carbon build up is not too bad, but if you fill up every tank you are going to shorten the lifespan of some parts and aid in funding terrorism.

well if youve experienced knocking in your truck using 87 when ford designed it for 87 then you must of got a bad batch of gas.

secondly, i doubt that ford is so far behind that they dont have variable valve timing which would retard the timing to eliminate detonation...

Or he got a bad batch of ford...

What does valve timing have to do with ignition? Nothing... Detonation occurs when residual heat in the cylinder causes the compressed gas to ignite without the aid of the spark plug. Higher octane gasses burn at higher temps, which reduces the likelihood of detonation. Higher compression motors are more prone to detonation, so they are designed to use higher octane fuels, regular compression engines do not need this protection and all aspects are designed to work with the regular grade fuel and its associated relative heat of combustion.

Actually, detonation (also known as knock) is when the gas ignites before the motor is ready for it to ignite. There is no way for teh piston to contact the top of the cylinder unless it breaks free of the connecting rod.

If your vehicles that are designed to run on 87 cannot run on 87, there is something wrong with them. And using higher octane fuel is a band aid for the problem that will eventually lead to other problems.

what do you think a knock sensor is used for?

ignition timing/valve timing all will work together to reduce any chance of detonation.

Again, VALVE timing has nothing to do with Spark Knock/detonation. Seriously. That all has to do with the quality of the gas and your compression ratio. And your ignition timing.

Besides, most of the Variable Valve timing engines have it controlled via oil pressure, which means that it only works at 4500 RPM or higher, when the oil pressure is greater. It's not electronically controlled like you think it is, unless you get an aftermarket controller for it. Even then, some Variable Valve timing designs are nothing more than counterweights like on the old distributors, and do nothing more than advance the cams a few degrees. The VVT technology has no impact on detonation/spark knock.

:fyi: i added valve timing out of the blue. didnt know if it was right or wrong. lulz. but either way, i did find this:

Retarding the cam timing can also lower cylinder pressures to reduce detonation at low r.p.m., but doing so hurts low speed torque which is not recommended for street engines or cars with automatics. seems like he's talking about mechanically retarding timing, as in, set it and forget it, not a variable technology. and this

Nissan - Continuous Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS). The ECU adjusts the engine's timing continuously to prevent detonation/pinging and optimize gas mileage.

who knows. i work on benz' which like you said, use oil pressure to change valve timing on the 272/3 engines.

The CVTCS, which I had not actually heard of until now, would be the only system capable of adjusting timing or valve movement to avoid any detonation. Other than that, everything is still operated by a camshaft, kinda hard to make the lobes of a camshaft adjustable, all you can do is have a second camshaft take over or a second set of lobes take over.

My guess with the guy saying that about retarding cam timing would just leave the intake open at the least oppertune time, so that the piston is already on its way back up to TDC before the valve closes? That way, less gas in the cylinder, lowers compression, reduces the opportunity for knock. And yeah, that would be a setting you could not adjust on the fly.

you dont adjust the lobes, you adjust the gear that runs with the timing chain, essentially "moving" the lobes without physically changing anything about the cam. i dont even know why im posting this as im sure you already know this, nor does it apply to anything electric since this picture is also showing a oil pressure controlled vvt system, but meh, whatever.

http://www.2carpros.com/images/variable_timing_camshaft_lifter.jpg

edit: whoa, just found this

http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/camshaft-ferrari.gif

Ferrari has a really neat way of doing this. The camshafts on some Ferrari engines are cut with a three-dimensional profile that varies along the length of the cam lobe. At one end of the cam lobe is the least aggressive cam profile, and at the other end is the most aggressive. The shape of the cam smoothly blends these two profiles together. A mechanism can slide the whole camshaft laterally so that the valve engages different parts of the cam. The shaft still spins just like a regular camshaft -- but by gradually sliding the camshaft laterally as the engine speed and load increase, the valve timing can be optimized.

So as engine RPM increases, the cam slides over and adjust the lobe profile? That is pretty slick. Wonder what controls the lateral movement of the cam though, and how long that part will last before it needs to be repaired/replaced...

That is a pretty slick concept, I am just curious about the longevity of it.

I am gonna go with no, even a mexican knows that the ethanol isnt going to make a difference...

I guess maybe you are an exception to the rule... No it doesnt make a difference, it will lean out your AFR slightly, but on stock fuel mapping this wont make a difference as they are typically rich to begin with, and that it only leans out the AFR very marginally. It is not detrimental to the engine in any way, yet many conspiracy theorists think it will. It is however pretty pointless as it takes moer money, effort, and energy to grow and harvest the corn and turn it into ethanol than it would to just use gas in the first place. Yay corn farmers! You have found a racket to steal money from americans to fund yourselves so you can fund the gas companies instead of us!
