Nope. Just put them anywhere (either on the device memory or the storage card) then tap them. They will install where they need to go. It's written into the .cab file.

Obviously .cab file = Windows Mobile

If you don't have one, get one. The fact that you can back everything up to a computer in case of warranty repairs or if its lost, stolen or damaged is priceless. I just had to use that feature since my HTC Touch has now swam in Coca Cola and Jack Daniel's after last night's dinner festivities.

I would put them on your storage card or storage memory rather than your device memory. Keep your device memory free as possible, or your phone's performance will dwindle.

Not true. If its a program that does a lot of edits to the registry. You'll be better off installing to the device memory. Installing those types of programs to the storage card will shorten the life of the card as it has to be rewritten too often. That's how files become corrupt. Programs that don't attach to the registry such as tweaking programs and music files are safe to run from the storage card memory.

Um well... if I was wrong then people wouldn't make cooked ROMs which I have one of them on my WinMo Omnia and it's much faster than the stock ROM. Go to the WinMo forums at Modaco, or XDA developers forum.
And for registry edits, I just use PHM regedit and do them manually... I have all my programs including SPB Mobile Shell 3 on my storage card with no issues. I haven't read 1 user on the modaco forum who installs all their programs on device memory and doesn't notice decrease in performance ;)

I will go to the XDA forums. I am one of the developers. :fyi: And I'm not talking about manual registry edits. I'm talking about the registry keys that are installed when you install a .cab file. I also cook my own ROMS. Also you have a Samsung Omnia, which relies on its storage card to function. It doesn't have much internal memory. I have also run MS3 on a storage card. Since it's just a shell, it does not write to the registry. Drivers and things that install to the /Windows directory are programs that write to the registry.

Well, I've been running Wozzer's Cooked 6.5 lite ROM on it from the Modaco forums. WinMo 6.5 isn't officially out yet, so it doesn't have all of the features, but it is stable enough for me to use. I really like the new WinMo today screen, it's actually quite usable unlike WinMo 6.1. However, I've switched back to Wozzer's Cooked ROM of WinMo 6.1 a couple days ago because of some compatibility issues I was having with 6.5. I really like SPB Mobile Shell 3 so I'm running it on top of WinMo, that way I don't interact with the WinMo interface at all, I really don't like it.
Direct your friend to here: http://www.modaco.com/category/342/i9x0-omnia-http-omnia-modaco-com/
There's a ton of tweaks and such on there that make the Omnia a hell of a lot better than stock. And he can go to the i910 ROM section to download the ROMs mentioned above. Hope that helps.
Also, to get GPS unlocked, he will need to install the "leaked ROM" on there, before he installs any other ROM. VZW is supposed to unlock their GPS eventually, but for now this is the unofficial way to do so ;)

Does he have to reset before the customizations run? That's what we have to do for the Vogues. VZW's customizations disables their GPS unless you pay for their VZNavigator service.
Also, nG, what carrier does he use his Omnia under? If its a GSM carrier, you may want to look at the i900 section instead for ROMs. Otherwise i910 is it.
* Also to willy, WinMo 6.5 official SYS and XIP was released last Friday at 12:00 pm central time. Expect official ROMs by next week.

I figured he meant i910 since I didn't think in the US there is an i900. Eh, correct me if I'm wrong heh.
I had to do a couple of soft resets after turning the GPS on after I flashed the ROM for it to work. It works pretty nicely now, except in poor service areas... dunno if that was what you were asking or not. All I had to do after the ROM was flashed was turn location on and a couple of resets and voila.
As for 6.5, I didn't know that was out now, thanks for the update! I haven't been updating myself on it lately, I'll have to check out what's going on. Maybe I can switch back.

Yeah, Wozzer's new 6.5 lite ROM is great, very stable. All of the bulky programs and such put on there are removed, only the good useful programs are still there, and a few are added such as Google Maps.

will do. however its looking like it will be late july or early august before i pick it up. I should have one in my hand by friday, we are going through pre training this week. Will let you know what I think at that time. my trainer said the only thing he didnt like is that the apps load a tad on the slow side. other than that he loves it. Agreed. I first had WinMo, then tried Blackberry, then back to WinMo, then iphone, now WinMo again. I got tired of the iphone real quick. The interface is extremely user friendly and fun, but it doesn't offer too much more than being a fun device for me. I value the ability to customize virtually any part of my WinMo more than the other devices which is why I think I'll stick with WinMo.

lol... You are saying I can customize the iphone interface as much as WinMo? I'm not talking about themes and apps and stuff. And the Blackberry was too business oriented for me. Perhaps the Tour 9630 will appeal to me more when it comes out shortly.
As for the iphone, I don't wanna upset and fanboys out there, so I'll keep it short. The iphone has 1 UI, you need to love it or leave it. With WinMo you can install a plethora of UIs, each one suiting a different person's wants/needs. The biggest reason I switched probably was the muiltitasking or lack there of on the iphone.
I had to try the iphone and was drawn in to the huge hype by advertising and such, and then realized hmmm all of this stuff they are claiming is revolutionary I've been doing on my WinMo device for years. I'm not knocking the iphone, It's just not for me. The only thing on the iphone I'd personally like on a WinMo phone is their touch screen.
To SM: I have heard of jailbreaking lol... I guess I should've clarified what I meant by customization.

I know what jailbreaking is... it's a fancy word for hacking.. gets you the registry so you can change/add stuff. I wasn't talking about just customizing the registry erg.
Plus: I've heard of Apple refusing warranties on people who jailbreak their phones, not sure if they still do it. Also, WinMo doesn't need to "jailbreak", because they are not under the hold of Apple ;)

You are right, that is why verizon is commercially whoring blackberry's anility to download and play music anywhere, that has always been a critical aspect of business operations
Meanwhile, my "toy" phone is completely capable of storing, reading, and displaying PDF files and .doc files. My BB was completely useless with PDF's when I had it.

Verizon is whoring the blackberry storm in general. They put a lot of money into a failing phone and are trying to make it up. Hence the reason you can buy one Storm and get another free.
And do you think the ability for the iPhone to read .pdfs's is "innovative"? Apple would have you believe that.

lol I think the reason I dislike Apple products so much now is the people who are completely brainwashed by their advertising and marketing... constantly defending it by false claims and getting so defensive. When it first came out it was supposedly revolutionary because it was a music player, email, organizer, phone all in one. Meanwhile, there were plenty of other devices out that did that.
I think the iPhone is a cool device, but leave it at that. The only thing very unique about it is the touch screen/multi touch. It's a fun phone, but not practical for business/power users. And yeah WinMo can read .pdf files, and do everything else that was mentioned here, as well as other things that the iphone can't that I've mentioned. Wait a minute... Let me read my .pdf file while I listen to my mp3s over my bluetooth stereo headset and play Street Fighter on my SNES emulator.
I have outdone the iPhone just like that.
Lol, it hasnt outdone it at all... Sounds like you are pretty jealous that you didnt get the iphone? Was it just too expensive for you? You know, the prices have come down, I bet you could afford one now.
There is no need to get so bent out of shape just because you have an inferior phone. You are taking it pretty personally. Maybe you can use your super hardcore cute little phone to look up a shrink to work through your inferiority complex?

The only thing very unique about it is the touch screen/multi touch. It's a fun phone, but not practical for business/power users. And yeah WinMo can read .pdf files, and do everything else that was mentioned here, as well as other things that the iphone can't that I've mentioned. Most recently, I've been using Hulu on my WinMo phone, while my friend with his iphone was upset that it didn't work on his phone ;)
O'rly? Fuck. Better not tell Spider Monkey that. His whole world will implode.
And this was made by Toshiba/Samsung. Not Apple. Expect to see this feature in the Toshiba G01 and the Zune HD. BTW the Zune HD is also getting nVidia's Tegra chipset. They are also considering partnering up with HTC to create a Zune phone. Bye iPhone.
Hardly. So the rest of the cell phone market finally caught up. Congrats. We've been here for years. On the next release we'll take off another half decade ahead but don't worry. We'll let you know what you can expect in the future as soon as we get it.

Caught up? I don't think the iPhone is capable of 1080p resolution on its screen. I also don't think it can project that resolution to a larger screen, such as an LCD flat screen for viewing. These things are the next portable media devices. The iPhone doesn't have the hardware acceleration capabilities that these phones have. And BTW you update will bring you to the current level of a WM smartphone :fyi:
To hoss, I'll let you feel as though your phone is superior to mine if you want. The rest of us know the truth. As for me affording the iPhone? Well let's see, my phone was $349 where as the iPhone was $199. The iPhone felt cheap and plasticky. The features of my phone far outweighed the iPhone, and my phone was about 2 years old then. It was your inferior network that really kept me away. I'm glad they were able to re-release the iPhone in 3G, because to release a media/internet focused device with slow ass EDGE was the dumbest thing Apple has done. Also there is a reason people always talk about the features that the iPhone is missing. They are comparing those features to a WM phone that already has it. Apple needs to catch up to the market.

I'd just like to know why you think the phone is so innovative, revolutionary, ahead of it's time. I just rarely hear good points, but maybe you could change my mind. How is it way ahead of other phones and also how is the next release going to propel it even further ahead? Just interested, not trying to start anything :hide:

It was innovative and revolutionary because there was nothing on the market that could do what it did as easily. Sure there were close seconds, but second place is the first loser. It has been what? Half a decade now? I fully expect other phones to leap frog the iPhone. That is how technology evolves. Somewhere in the near future the iPhone will leapfrog out front again and visa versa. Again, that's just how it works. As for me saying the iPhone is the best phone ever? We'll that's easy to explain - it is the best ever because its the one I have. Dur.

"Datalight announced Reliance Nitro, a new tree-based file system with broad performance implications for embedded device manufacturers around the globe. Early tests show sequential and random write speeds as much as five times faster on Microsoft Windows Mobile than the default file system, allowing devices like smartphones and digital cameras to store and access large amounts of data without the lag time often experienced when dealing with multimedia and other large files.
To make Reliance Nitro faster than other file systems, the Datalight engineering team analyzed all I/O operations, eliminated all redundant calls to the disk, and optimized the file system’s disk operations. This translates into much faster throughput speed for read and write operations. In fact, the revolutionary tree-based allocation structure allows Nitro to be up to 100 times faster on file operation speeds, enabling a much more responsive user experience.
The new file system will initially be available for Windows Embedded CE, Windows Mobile, and Wind River VxWorks. An RTOS porting kit will be offered to allow porting to any 32-bit operating system. Like Reliance, the well-known transactional file system on which it is based, Reliance Nitro provides 100% data reliability and fast mount times.
“Our intent in building Reliance Nitro was to mitigate the sluggish performance associated with increasing data storage on devices,” said Roy Sherrill, Datalight CEO. “Nitro will allow users to finally enjoy the high speed capabilities of flash. We expect fast adoption as manufacturers vie for the loyalty of customers seeking better performing devices.”
Reliance Nitro is available immediately from Datalight and the Datalight worldwide network of channel partners. Please visit them at http://www.datalight.com/companyinfo/resellers.php to find a reseller near you.
The Reliance family of file systems and FlashFX family of flash media managers comprise the Datalight flash file system solution. Reliance was designed from the ground up for high reliability applications. Dynamic Transaction Point™ technology provides 100% immunity from file system corruption, even after unexpected system interruption. Embedded applications can benefit from faster boot times that remain consistent for the life of the product, regardless of disk size. FlashFX™ Pro features pre-written support for over 300 flash parts, works with virtually any NAND controller, and features wear leveling, bad block management, and background compaction for unrivaled performance.

Ok, so I got my training on the pre today and got to spend about an hour playing with it. I must say, I am quite happy with it.
Things I liked
One thing I was surprised by was how small it was. Its roughly the size of the HTC Touch and slighly smaller than the Treo Pro.That being said, it fit my hand perfectly.
I liked how easy it was to launch applications. I loaded about 5 applications at once. They each took about 3 seconds to load(somewhat slower than other phones out there) but once they were loaded they worked flawlessly, since the pre uses a "card" feature for applications meaning each application is treated like a deck of cards that you can flip to it was easy to change between applications, a simple press of the button on the front of the pone and a flick left or right and it changed to the application. Closing apps were even easier, slide your finger from the bottom up and discard the card. I was also impressed with the camera included. gave a nice full screen view when taking a picture.
I especially loved the web browser on it, I had 3 sites open at one time and loved the fact i could zoom in and out using 2 fingers. in a pinch motion open and closed.
I also loved the synergy concept(the phone incorporates all your contacts from facebook, gmail, aim, msn, yahoo, and other sources into one contact so that you can easily switch between methods of contact and keep it all organized) lets say you are talking to someone via aim, and they sign off, at that point you could continue your conversation with them by clicking the cell# next to the contact name and send them a text or email.
things i didnt like
Well there were only 3 things i did not like about the phone.
1. the slide for the qwerty keyboard was somewhat hard to open with one hand. I imagine over time it would open more easily
2. where the bottom of the keyboard slides out(bottom of phone) the edge is sharper than i would imagine. I think rounding over that edge would have made it perfect, if you use the keyboard too much i could only imagine your fingers being rubbed a little raw.
3. no sd card slot. the phone has an onboard 8gig memory w/ aprox 7gigs available for the customer to use which acts as a usb mass storage, Me personally, i'd like to have the option to put a 16gb or larger card in it. perhaps in future models.

I have an app that rings my phone so that I can do just that.
I really use every feature of my phone as I rely in it to process invoices, check email. Internet, and various social networking sites to keep up with my clients.
I have an app that gives me a 1-800 number that rings my cell phone, my home phone, and any other phone that I want it to... I could even have it ring a hotel room phone if I was out of town.
I wish I had a phone that would let me do business and not just be a cool toy :(
And it also synchs all my emails so I can reply to customers when they email me. And another app that allows me to manage my finances, create and send invoices, and keep up with all of my companies billing...
And it wirelessly synchs all my meeting and calendar appts so that everything is changed as soon as I change it on teh computer.

Okay then, let's delve deeper. I have also developed an app that lets me modify .cpr and .xml files on the fly. I can uncompress .bin files, .exe files and .dll files in order to re-write them. I also have a custom version of pocket Photoshop in case I need to do any graphics processing. Since I rely heavily on the multitasking ability of my WM phone for all of this, the iPhone could not come close to satisfying those needs.
