I went to this dealership earlier today to pick up a car that had been repo-ed. (they do in-house financing) I started talking to one of the salespeople about an 03' VW GTI 1.8T that was sitting on the lot. It was black on black with Recaro sport seats. It was also a 5-speed. All options. He tells me that the car has 89,000 miles on it and the asking price is $8,700. I noticed a small crack/chip on the front bumper, and the headlights are rather hazy but everything else seemed fine. I'm wondering if I should sell/trade my 03' Audi A6 for it. My Audi is in pristine condition with only 57,000 miles on it. Silver with the platinum interior. The only thing I hate about it is it has the anemic 3.0L V6 with Quattro. I average about 18.9 MPG with this thing.
I asked the girl I'm talking to and her only gripe is that the GTI is a hatchback. She doesn't like them. Otherwise she thinks its a smart move. My car note right now on the Audi is around $500 / month. The GTI would be around $160 /month.
Should I get it?

Okay, after staring at Slammed's Accord on 20s I want to put 20s on my Audi. This makes my decision that much harder.

Hard to answer without knowing your finances. Are the payments hard to cover each month on the Audi? Are you looking for better gas mileage?

They aren't hard to cover, but I would like some relief. And yes I am looking for better gas mileage. $70 a week in gas is starting to hurt a bit. I'll have to talk with my insurance company to kind of weigh my decision. I'm wondering if a sporty GTI would be more costly than the mundane Audi sedan. Other things that are worrying me is my apartment complex. The mexicans here don't give a shit about other's property. Since parking here (2 months) I've acquired 2 door dings, and a large scratch on my trunk lid. Luckily I get discounts on body work at the auction. I don't think I would be as obsessed with the VW.

One thing to consider is that in terms of miles the VW is right on the edge of where lenders will not finance it. (At least from what I remember).
This means that if you get it and don't like it you may have trouble reselling it.

If mechanically sound, it wouldn't be a bad idea. Really really REALLY important to take to a trusted mechanic. Don't take their mechanics word in it (he works for them). Also, Audi's have a much higher repair cost, although break less often from what I've seen.
I wouldnt do it, that is too much money to spend on a car with that high of mileage IMO... Especially a car with such a spotty reliability rating as VW. From my research, VW's are either relatively fine mechanically, or complete money pits.
If you do go for it, I would suggest putting the money you would be saving on your auto loan payments into a savings account, at least for the first several months of ownership, to build up personal savings in case something goes wrongwith the car, or anything else in your life. It could be a wise move, but cars are always gambles, not investments...

See I made an assumption that VW was high quality. If indeed the Hosster is right (which past information from him would make me believe he is) I would say that you are better off keeping the Audi. Initial lower cost will not help you when things go wrong.

I looked into vw's once before, people either love them or hate them. And reliability seems to be hit or miss with them, but the higher mileage ones seem to have pretty costly repair items that need to be done to them.
But this is somewhat of a moot point in this argument, since Audi is made by VW and shares (for the most part) the reliability stigmata.

I would say no fucking way, high miles and any time you go from a luxury sedan to a semi-fast hatch it's a downgrade.
Though the 500/mo car note sucks how the fuck did you get such a high car note? I paid 15k for my car and I only pay 233/mo.

He probably bought it new. Audi's arent cheap...
I can see his dillema though, he would be saving $340 a month on the loan payment, plus gas savings, plus insurance savings. But I think that maitenance would come back to bite him hard, especially on a repo. More often than not, people know their cars are getting repo-ed, and they treat them worse than rental cars.

Oh I figured for a 6 year old car he probably bought it used with low miles I don't know anyone under 65 that puts <12k on a car per year.
I didnt pay attention to the specifics of his car in his OP :(
I dont know then, Audi's do hold their value pretty well.

The GTI wasn't repo-ed It's at a dealership. The good thing is I work part-time for the Manheim Auction that they bought it from. I can get it all checked out for free. I've already gotten the CarFax report on it and it all checked out clean. I talked to my insurance company and I would be saving around $260/ month in premiums. I originally bought my Audi in a pretty high expense area. Rockville, Md. My current insurance premiums is a direct reflection of D.C's high crime rate.
I'm going to look at the car tomorrow and inspect it very well. I know my way around an engine, so I can be pretty informed after my test drive. And German cars are not that expensive to repair. Since I've owned my Audi, all I've had to do was replace a set of tires once, replace a belt tensioner, and oil changes.
At 89,000 miles I was a bit concerned about it being rather high. It actually averages out to a little under 15,000 per year. That's not too bad.
My main concern is not the car so much as the financing. I'm waiting to hear what my credit union has to say before I take the final plunge. If I can have my Audi paid off and finance this without being upside down, then I may go for it. If not, I'll be shopping for 20"s.
Besides, this move is geared to save money for a much better investment. A house.

I've been talking to the dealer. I got them down to $7,000 Just found out that they paid $6,000 for it from the auction. It was a Manheim Certified Vehicle, which means it has been inspected by our mechanics and deemed excellent condition.

Hell, you can probably replace the car for 1500
That is an assload of savings in insurance...
I think for saving $500+ a month I would be tempted as hell... I would definitly do what I suggested though and dump that $500/month into a savings account for when shit does go wrong with it...
I wouldnt neccisarily compare it to your audi as far as maitenance needs and cost, like I had said, all my research shows that the vw family is spotty sa far as reliability. One car might have no issues, while another may have major issues. People either love them or hate them, I have seen very few reviews where people were neutral. The savings alone could make it worthwhile though, as long as you have an emergency fund to cover anything that could go wrong.

This
My in-laws had an 03 jetta. Thing was a major lemon, it kept getting a check engine light, the dealer would take it in for a few days replace a few sensors, return it and the one time they didn't even get off the lot before the light came on again.
After just about every electrical component on the car was replaced, including the computer, they were offered an 05 below dealer cost... at least so they were told. We went to another dealership and without them knowing what was going on we could have gotten the car for 1k cheaper.
They did end up with a newer one and it has been mostly trouble free.

Well that's good advice that I will follow if I get this car.
I feel it is only a temporary solution until I save a sizeable down payment on the house that I want. After that I'll probably re-sell it and either buy a newer Audi, or get away from the VW family all together. The goal of the purchase is to cut back my monthly expenses since my salary isn't going up anytime soon. Think of it as corporate downsizing.

go with your gut feeling!!!! and remember im a car salesman so dont listen to shit cuz as long as my lips are moving im lying
Good to know for future encounters!
No really, the guy I was talking to seemed a bit sleezy to me. I did my own background research on the car since the dealership bought it from us. I probably know much more of the history on that car than he does. I'm going to use this as my bargaining tool. As I still like my Audi, I'll be quick to walk away from a bad deal.
