Pops birthday is coming up and he has a shitload (about 300) VHS tapes he would like to convert to DVD so I am looking for a good solution for him.

Any suggestions on a VHS/DVD burner combo which will allow him to copy directly from VHS to DVD? I know a few years ago you could only copy from TV to DVD but believe most of the newer models do allow this.

There are lots out there. Sony made one a while ago that I know that could do exactly what you were looking for, and could also upscale VHS and DVD to HD content through an HDMI output. Do you have a budget?

They don't make DVD/VHS in one combos anymore?

Yes, $200 or less. I saw one of home shopping club yesterday that could do it but have written them off for life so I know there must be alternatives out there.

My biggest issue is if I go to Best Buy and ask the employee he may not know WTF he is talking about and I don't want to have to ship it to FL, have it not do what is needs after he opens it and then have to deal with getting it back and returning it myself.

Yes they make combos like I have one from about 10 years ago but all that did was record VHS and maybe TV and the DVD side was just a standalone player.

Thanks, my pops is very computer illiterate so I am looking for something where he can pop in a blank DVD, his VHS and hit one button and have it be done in an hour or however long it takes.

I just use my PC. Capture raw video, encode and author a DVD.

Unless they are really obscure or unavailable items, why?

The sheer time, and cost of the unit... blank media... time... and buh...

Most regular DVD movies are cheaps now-a-days.....

When it comes to buying a dedicated unit, I agree. My PC had the ability to import raw video though, so I did it to a few. Mainly home videos, but a few old movies that I didn't think needed to be in a better format. Didn't cost me extra to do it though. If it did, I wouldn't do it. I'd just take the home videos to one of those shops that does that service and replace the movies with DVD.

Why doesn't he just pirate and burn all the movies for his dad like the rest of the kids today?

I don't pirate... So I guess that puts me on the outside of things.

Yea I realize that. I did however download songs at one point in time. But, I just did it to demo the music. If I liked the CD I went and purchased it, if I didn't I deleted it.

I think that is fair.
