My 500GB is full :( I was hoping by the time it was full I would be able to find an external 1TB drive for about $100 that did not require a external power source but it doesn't look like it is happening.
Probably go with this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136317
Anyone know of any good deals on 1TB external drives that don't need external power?

I know they can be inconvenient, but I prefer thm to have their own power source instead of draining from the USB.

Why? Is there any benefit as far as performance?
The only downfall I worry about is getting to an older machine with low powered USBs and not being able to spin it up.

That's one.
Less strain on the host for electrical demand. Not that it can't handle it, but who knows. For laptops the supplies they use aren't big to begin with so as little strain on them as possible, I think would maintina the power bricks longevity.
Most that don't use their own power, are based off mobile HDDs(hence why more expensive) and run at slower speeds. So there is more theoretical performance from a powered external.
Most minor things of course, but when it comes to cost, I see no advantage to going to the smaller usb powered externals. Because they use mobile drives don't expect to find them at the same price point per size as the HDDs with their own supplies.

Yep yep and yep. All of that.
If you want portability just buy an enclosure and load it with a drive (or 2) yourself. Tad larger but you can use your current drive and add a second in a few different array options.

This. Although Newegg normally has the best prices, they are linked through pricewatch so you can see if they do on that particular item. 90% of the time they win, every once in awhile they don't and you save a few bucks.

Pricewatch thanks for the link have not used that site in ages. They actually do have a few cheaper options on there so depending on what brand I decide to go with it could be helpful.
Any maxtor, seagate, WD drive pretty much safe to go with? I saw a nice Caviar 1TB 'green' model for about $80 bucks that seemed ok.
IN reality I should be getting a few of them and doing a simple raid setup, I have an older dell server that would work great for it and it would probably save =me from having to upgrade in another year.. any suggestions on cheap raid cards?

While this is true, I don't bother comparison shopping anymore. Many that show beter prices are not in the same league as newegg imo. Service has always been top notch so why stray. I used to pricewatch though, years ago.

Get a Black WD, or a .12 Seagate. The Green WD's are too slow.

I will probably jump on this http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?src=eb&name=HD-0A38016
Would have liked one of these but could use the $30 bucks, the .12 Seagate I saw on newegg was getting horrible reviews so I pass on that one.

Now don't think I'm being a hypocrit and I'm NOT saying to buy these drives for your daily usage. These are .11 drives. There is firmware but I use these as backup drives, NOT for OS drives. but 1.5tb for 100 each is hard to pass up.

RAID backup system.
I have an external server running windows home server...I have an internal server running windows 2000 advanced server then I have a Proliant enterprise server that runs scripts, apps, and a few other things :sneaky: THEN....these fellas go into the win2000 server and run acronis...so they will not only be mirrored, but they will have images of all the other servers (which is why I keep this fella not on the net).
