Mustang was the first of it's kind. Even though now a day they're a dime a dozen... and they aren't even that fast anymore. The newer ones are a bit quicker... but it's all economical now. Everyone's worrying about gas mileage rather than raw power.

Just because something was the first of its kind doesn't mean every one after that was built to compete with it.

If that were true it would mean that a BMW M5 was built to compete with a Ford Model T. I don't think that is the case at all.

I thought they both were introduced in 1964. I really don't think the original GTO had anything to do with the Mustang. Mustang was smaller, lighter, and designed to be cheap. The GTO is still a pretty large car.
