So I have an older Dell 400SC server I can use for a file server for my new drives, my question is everyone seems to be getting the NAS boner.
Is there anything I am missing out on other than being able to connect to it remotely if I need to? I saw a D-Link NAS setup at Newegg for about $100 bucks but if there is no real benefit other than public net access to it then I guess I will just use the old box.
I do realize power use is also a benefit but doubt I would see much difference over a year anyway.

If you have the equipment already, just use what you have. Any outside access can be setup through software anyways.
Internally, just map the drive and be done with it.
For external...ftp or install windows home server or something similar.

Yeah just pulled the trigger on this one, I kept trying to justify getting the Dell deal you got but don't really want to spend the cash now and this will hold me over for a while.
I imagine in a few years when I fill this up (unless I start dling HD media a lot) we will be getting 3-5TB drives for around $100 by then :)

If your looking to get a 1tb drive search Hitachi. They are selling 1tb for 79.99 lately on a few different sites.
How much capacity does the current system your are talking about have? Also, does the board have a RAID on-board?
