View Full Version : Fucking router...

I recently switched to Comcast Cable, and with that, I acquired the ability to download at speeds no less than 750kb/s on my private tracker.
But, this is regardless... I got a Linksys Router (Model Number: WRT120N), and I don't know if it sucks, or I suck, or my house sucks, but there are intermittent connection losses. Not, low signal and slow speeds, it just drops off the face of the Earth. It's not like during this time I'm not receiving a signal, because even my brother's computer loses it at the same time. So, it's as if the router itself is having intermittent WiFi disconnects. As if the bitch just decides, "Fuck it! I don't feel like doing WiFi right this moment." It usually comes back within a few minutes, but those few minutes are such a fucking mission.
So, I come to you guys, in an attempt to figure the problem out. A friend of mine has the same router, and she has no problems with it. Any ideas?

This only happens on wireless connections or wired also?
Have you already updated the firmware?

Should've specified. Only wireless. I checked for a firmware update and didn't find any (with the program that came with the actual unit.)

Yeah, there are no firmware updates for that router. How much did you pay for that thing? I would almost suggest taking it back and getting a different model. Either that or picking up a nicer model off of Craigslist and running Tomato or DD-WRT firmware on it.

I was out of town when they bought it. I have no idea. I come back and the router kept resetting itself and kept fucking up the MAC addresses, and they couldn't figure out we had to disable the MAC filtering. It's being a pain in the circumsized dick.

Ask flip which one he got, I think he uses wireless all the time and has not mentioned an issue.
My D-Link has never given me problems but it's just a .11b i think

Few questions first off. Are you in a house that is near other houses or an apartment with wireless around you?
How many different wireless machines are trying to access the router? Do they all lose the signal?
Easy stuff first:
Tighten and redirect the antennas (I haven't looked up the model so perhaps they are inside the box). If they are not, move them around. Also, try to move the router from its current spot.
If you do this and nothing helps. Try this. Turn off the laptop, the modem and the router. (the pc is not important but anything worth doing...)
Turn on the MODEM....wait until it aqcuires a solid light saying it has established its connection.
Next, turn on the router and wait for it to sync up (usually takes less than 30 seconds, but wait 2 minutes).
Turn back on the laptop or wireless device. Let me know the outcome.

Do not go this route yet.....but here is the firmware link

Hopefully Hoss stops in and looks at this, I'm thinking this is the same unit he has (which was not a good unit IMO, but we did get it working).
You have no antenna and this has only internal antenna's.

I'd tell you what's wrong, but just like Hoss, you'd opt for the hard way.

True, but there is a way to get someone else to fix your problems for just about everything imaginable...

Two of my neighbors have WiFi. I can pick up on both because I have a 7DB antenna, but my brother can't.

2 on average. And, yes. All machines hooked up to wireless lose signal.

My brother's doing "something important". So, I'll update in a bit.

This is honestly a crappy router. Advanced tabs and change some of the power levels and priorities could help. I'd take it back and get a different one personally. If you HAVE to have this one working, update the firmware and try from that point. Make sure that it is set to autoscan. If it is and loses signal, try picking one channel manually.
Isnt that the same one we just had fun with Justin?

Pretty positive yes, I actually asked you a few posts up to check to make sure.
Doh! Didnt see that...
Pretty sure that was the same one.

Yeah, it's pretty hit or miss with that router. From the reading I've done, mostly miss.
I'm sure if its the only option, we can make it work though.

I just want it not to lose signal mid-game. I'm not asking for 100% 150mb/s speeds. Just enough to download movies and games and shit.
EDIT:: I'm no longer a power user.

Hopefully within the next few months I will be upgrading to something better... This D-link works, but after seeing how much faster the N is, I want it...

I agree. Not to mention your laptop is N too. So it would be easy to isolate that signal and get rid of some of the clutter on that channel for the laptop at least. The ps3 will still be G though.

I thought there wasn't any firmware updates on that unit...? I'll go check again.

Make sure you get a router that transmits both bands. There are some that claim they're N routers and work with G, but when a G is connected, all of the signals become G. So, yeah. Research! Do something my family didn't.
And as for returning it, it's not possible. I made them return the other one they had and in my brother's infinite wisdom, he got this one. He's like, "Linksys is good." I shrugged. It doesn't look too good. But, I could care less how it looks. As long as it can keep a steady stream to the internet and allow me to download all the bullshit I want.

Well, so far it hasn't gone out once. It normally would've gone out at least once so far. But, I'll let you know in a few days.

uTorrent is always set to max up and down. It's how I ride.
But, yeah. That's not when the wireless dropped, oddly enough. It was always when no one was abusing it... like, my brother on the browser and me playing a game (not even an online game.)
