http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/introducing-google-chrome-os.html

I don't get how it is an OS, is it just something on top of Linux similar to how say Desqview/X used to be under DOS or is it an entire OS ie: Mac?

I can't help but think this will be a failtrain but they seem to do a pretty good job at everything else they do (sans Chrome)

Makes me wonder if they could possibly be working with software companies to get net based applications up and going so help cut down on privacy. All will seem great until the first major DoS attack taking out the net all over the place IMO.

For those of you too young to remember Desqview/X

It's just Linux with a GUI and built in Chrome browser.

I'm wondering if I posted this here or someplace else, I'll have to look. I predicted this for a LONG time. In time, you won't need an O/S installed, just login to a console.

I totally agree however, I don't know how well it will work due to the fact again that major DoS attacks can take out huge chunks of the internet (read about s/n.korea outages over the past few days) meaning you can't connect to adobe or whoever for your app so you are SOL which means issues for businesses etc.

I like a lot of googles shit but have always kind of thought they were heading in the direction of MS with getting too big and too powerful. I use shit like google calendar, gmail, google search etc.. when you tie it all in together the whole idea of all the info they could potentially have on you gives off the whole 'big brother' type of vibe. I would also imagine the time will come when the government will also feel they are controlling a bit too much as they did with MS.

Then again maybe I am just living in the dark ages I was looking up how to run a BBS on the server today

Gotta love a company who's motto is "do no evil".

Na, there is still a good deal of technology and security that needs put in. The DOS attacks were well planned and the primary issue is that their are just too many stupid people with computers. Most of that DoS came from people with virus's

I do see your point though. Of course the last time the gov't told google to do something, they just told them no ha ha ha

The article I read stated that Google would be focusing on netbooks first. I personally think this is a good move, if they can make a light and fast OS for those small books. Linux is good, yeah, but can be kludgy to someone who doesn't know it. Let's face it, Vista on a netbook is a joke, although Windows 7 may change that.

I'm buying a netbook this fall to take to school with me, and would be more than willing to try Google OS on it. I'll try Windows 7 first, and if that's a wash, I'll move it to Linux. I'm proficient enough to get around and have it do what I need to. After all, that netbook won't be good for much more than email, surfing, and word processing. But that's all i need it for.

I've read that Win7 has had great results!

I'm a bit worried about google attempting this on netbooks if its anything like the android software. Yes, totally different platforms, but nothing like the amazingness it was supposed to be.

Win7 flies on my 1000he, I honestly did not notice much difference in performance from Vista > Win7 but then again I never ran it on my netbook and my desktop rig has a decent amount of power.

That's good to know, Toasted, cuz that's the model I'll be buying come this fall. I take you wiped Vista right from the get go and installed 7? For the record, you know you'll have to do a clean install when you get the retail 7, right?

Mine came with XP I still think all the EEE's do and yeah I just wiped everything I don't usually do it any other way.

Runs great /w 2GB and I have seen quite a few people say the same about the stock 1GB.

Ah. Did you add the ram yourself or order it that way? I'm assuming ordered it. Xp, eh? I'm thinking if I buy a netbook now, it will come with a free upgrade voucher for Windows 7. I know they're doing it for some machines, but not all of them yet.

Did it myself, basically unscrew one screw on the bottom and pop the old out and the new in :)

You can still get in on the beta of Win7 now at MS. It works until June 10th next year at which time there will be a shitload of serials floating around I am sure.

Ah, gotcha. I thought those books came with one RAM module soldered to the board, and only one replaceable. Apparently it only has one stick period lol.

Actually, it's Windows 7 RC now. The Beta expires in August, with the RC version expiring next year. I also happen to have 5 keys to Windows 7 RC and I'm only using one copy. Good to go. Those serials floating around after June of next year? Useless.

Oh, forgot to mention I also pre ordered my copies of Windows 7 already for 50 bucks each. Yeah, it's only Home Premium, but 50 bucks? Done and bought them. If anyone else is interested in this killer deal, go to Microsoft's website. They are only upgrade copies, but for 50 bucks who cares. Win 7 Pro is 100 bucks. No mention of Ultimate or Business, at least from what I saw. This deal expires July 11th, so hurry up. Oh, and MS doesn't charge your card until they ship you the product, unlike most other retailers.

Thats their business, targeted marketing. Everything you type into any one of those applications, it queries and returns a targeted ad.
