Google Voice: Coming soonPrint
Google Voice is a service that gives you one number for all your phones, voicemail that is easy as email, and many enhanced calling features like call blocking and screening, voicemail transcripts, call conferencing, international calls, and more. ..

Wrong. I need clicky keys and a card slot if I was going to get that fancy with my phone.
Wrong. Touch screen keyboards are a step backwards in technology. Not a step forward.
Indeed. Traditional smart phones have been providing those needs for half a decade.
All smart phones have been doing what the iphone just invented, for a decade.

just got mine yesterday. let me see if i can invite you yet.
We still dont know wat it is...
basicly, you choose a phone number that they give you, and you can give it to people so you dont have to give out your home number or cell number and it forwards all the calls to the number you choose. you can also get voice mails over the web and sms and all that type of stuff.
very much so. as soon as I can get this thing to send me the voice confirmation to my home phone(hard to do when on dialup) i'll be using it as my business number.
That is exactly what I was thinking as well, could use it as my business number.
There is another service that does this also, gives you a 1-800 number.
i have been looking for an 800 service that is free. any info?
with google voice you can have it forward to more than one number, so you can forward it to say your cell and home at the same time and which ever picks up first is the one that it forwards it too.

Well I got my invite finally and set that shit up.. Pretty cool it basically gives you a new number which you can do all kinds of shit with I am still learning about.
I have my 800 number setup to forward to my google voice number which rings on my cell and my office phone ring at the same. If I don't answer either it takes a voicemail and google transcribes it and sends it to me in an email as text on my phone and PC.
It also allows me to filter calls by recognizing if they are on my contact list or calling via the 800 number so it asks them their name and when I pickup a call from my google # it tells me who it is and I can send it to voicemail or pickup.
There is also a way to text free I believe but I have not figured that out yet.
Either way google is becoming a monopoly as big as M$ but I am enjoying the slow ride to hell :)
i have been looking for an 800 service that is free. any info?
Never heard of such a thing, I use a company called First Communications and only pay about .05/min with a small $2.00 monthly fee. I don't get a lot of calls so my bill is usually <5.00  I was grand-fathered in though from the old company that went bankrupt and I believe there is about a $25/mo fee they have just for the line itself not including the minutes.
When I get an invite I will send it to you, I believe they will start giving them out to users soon. You may also want to get on the list if you have not already, I just signed up when I created this thread and they emailed me the invite about four days ago.

http://web500.us/how-to-use-google-voice-to-send-and-receive-free-sms/
To send an SMS, click on SMS button above Inbox. Enter the cell phone number, type your message and click on Send to send out the SMS
To reply an SMS, click on Reply below the SMS you received and type your text message. Then, click Send. You can also do this from your cell phone, but your mobile carrier may charge you for this.
Send an SMS through your Contacts list: Click Contacts on the left side of the page. Select the checkbox next to the contact you’d like to send an SMS to, and click the SMS link next to the appropriate number.
You can also reply by SMS to a voicemail or call: Click the Reply drop-down menu and select SMS.
Trick: SMS sent from Google voice is from 1-406-xxx-xxxx. Reply to the SMS sent from Google voice will send to your google voice inbox and also copy to your cell phone. Your cell phone may charge the messages receive. To avoid this charge, you have to delete your cell phone number from your settings. If you want to read the reply on your cell phone then you need to keep your cell phone number in Google Voice settings.
Note: You can only send SMS to US cell phones.

New features to google voice announced. You can now get texts directly to your gmail through voice and even reply from there. So you can have text conversations without using text but goes straight to phone.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-19882_3-10349110-250.html?tag=newsLatestHeadlinesArea.0
Two new little Google Voice features just made their way into Gmail. A new option lets text messages sent to Google Voice show up as e-mail messages in Gmail. You can reply to messages from Gmail, too, which makes it a nice platform for carrying on a text message conversation.
Google Voice text messages can now be read and replied to from within Gmail.
(Credit: Screenshot by Rafe Needleman/CNET)
Also, there's a new Labs feature in Gmail that lets you play your Google Voice voicemail messages from inside the Gmail viewer. Previously, Gmail would send you the text transcript of your message, but if you wanted to play the audio file, it would open a new browser window to do so.
The Google Voice player is now embedded in Gmail. This is a good thing, since the Gmail voicemail transcription service is woefully inaccurate.
(Credit: Screenshot by Rafe Needleman/CNET)
Small snags: Although the features are thematically linked, they're enabled differently. The SMS feature is turned on within the Settings tab of Google Voice; the Gmail voicemail player needs to be enabled from withing the Labs tab of Gmail. Also, while receiving and replying to Google Voice SMS messages in Gmail is now easy, I didn't see how one could initiate a Google Voice SMS conversation from within Gmail even with the SMS feature turned on.
I like where this is going. I'm still not a been a huge fan of the Gmail user interface, but it's great to be able to see and manage e-mails, voicemails, and SMS messages all in one place. It will be interesting to see if Google Wave gets similar Universal Inbox features.
Google announced these enhancements on the Google Voice Blog (the SMS feature) and the Gmail Blog (voicemail player).
