So this is the first time I have ran more than 1 ATA drive on a system but for some reason when I click on my second drive I just added it takes 3-5 seconds for it to 'respond' meaning load up in explorer.
I never had this issue with IDE drives so I am not sure if it is just something with ATA drives or possibly I have a drive that is fubarred somehow.

Best bet is to run CS on both drives....but if you only have two make sure that either that is selected on both jumpers OR you put one to master and one to slave and make sure to put them in the correct order on the IDE cable (it will say master slave on some ide cables)

They are SATA drives, I don't think those can have 2 drives on one can they? Right now I just have them on separate channels.
Once it opens it works fine and no I didn't even look at the jumpers.
I thought ATA and SATA were the same lol, never heard them referred to as ATA before recently always called them IDE.

ATA=IDE, SATA is well, SATA lol.
What ports do you have them on? Something to check, make sure SMART for hard drives is on in your BIOS, and download Speedfan, check the SMART section, and see what the HD health is.

I am assuming 1 and 2 as the third goes to the hookup for external SATA and the fourth is empty.
I will give that a shot tonight because I only have like a week to return it if it is about to shit the bed.

Also, what OS are you running? You need to make sure DMA is turned on for that drive. If you know where to find it, make sure it's on.

Win7 64-bit

Go to Control Panel, search for Device manager, and scroll down to your IDE/ATAPI controllers, expand the tree, right click, and make sure DMA is enabled on all of them that have devices on them, and check to see which mode they're on.

While I'm thinking about it, did you ever install your manu's chipset drivers? Or are you using the Win 7 generics?

lol whatever comes with win7. I will check the UMA thing and the test you mentioned when I get home.
It's not a big deal I just want to return the drive if its going to die.

Yeah, I understand. I just want to make sure that you go through all the headache of a return and don't have the same thing happen. Try installing your manu's Vista X64 drivers for shits and giggles too. May help.

Whoops, sorry I thought you meant IDE (was thinking who the fuck uses those anymore, but ya know) but yeah, BT has you going in the correct direction.
Still possibly jumpers but VERY unlikely. Some older boards do not function with a newer speed drive and you have to jump it to a 1.5 instead of the 3.

FINALLY!! We fucking agree on something.

Well DMA is on for both drives, however I noticed D: the new drive is the 0 drive and C: the OS drive is 1.
Odd because I did not touch the cable on the OS drive I just added the D: new drive to the next available port.

Not a big thing, you may have just inadvertently plugged your first drive into the number 1 slot. Motherboards really don't have any set standard as to which port gets number 0. Could be top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right, etc. Nothing really to get excited about there.
What about the SMART test and drivers?

Now, when you installed this drive, did you shut down, install drive, and boot back up and then use it, or did you boot up, install it, and then reboot? Windows 7 still requires a reboot after you install new hardware, tried that yet? There should have been a little bubble pop up in the bottom right corner telling you that, but I miss them sometimes.
If you go to disk management, what's the status of the drive? Did you format or partition it?

Also which file system are you using on each drive?

I know I have SMART enabled in the bios I just need to run those tests, I get home at 1:30am and have to drive back to work at 9:00am each day so I will run it on my next day off on Thurs. I will also try and find the drivers, can't say I have ever user a HDD driver in my life and I have been installing hard drives since 10MB 10lb MFM drives were the norm so this is something new to me.

LOL yeah I turned it off, installed and rebooted. It did not find it because that channel was off or something at first so after fucking with the bios for a minute figure it out and it showed up fine in Windows.
Also which file system are you using on each drive?
Both are NTFS. I am guessing one issue I should take care of is getting C: on the 0 channel and D: on 1 and see if that helps.
I also realized it is probably only 3-4 seconds and once I open it I can close explorer, reopen and go to D: right away so it seems once it is accessed after a reboot it is no longer an 'issue' which again may just be me being picky I need to try it again though to make sure.

To me it sounds like an issue with the drivers for the motherboard or controller not the OS or the hard drives themselves.
Also sounds like you are being picky :P

Yeah, what pl8er said. You don't need HD drivers, they don't even make them. What I was talking about were your chipset drivers, AKA motherboard drivers. If you are using the stock ones provided by Microsoft, it may be causing your issue.
