View Full Version : For those that do their own oil changes

Me and a friend have a bit of a debate.

WHen you change your oil, do you fill the new oil filter up with oil before putting it back or not?

I always do beause an article in car craft magazine said that your engine suffers a severe drop in oil pressure for the second or so it takes to fill up with filter with oil. My friend said this is inconsequential and just add another step, and if you have a jap car where the filter goes on sideways, you spill oil everywhere.

Thoughts?

If you don't the engine doesn't have adequate oil pressure while the filter is filling up.

This is a must...then let it sit for a few minutes to cool and recheck fluid levels and/or leaks.

I spread oil on the gasket, but I've never filled the filter. I'm not burning rubber seconds after I do an oil change, so any drop in pressure hasn't damaged anything yet.

oil doesn't circulate. Instead of oil moving to lubricate the engine, the oil is filling up a filter.

Yeah it includes oil and filter. It takes them about 10 minutes and you sit in your car.

My dad used to change the oil but doesn't anymore due to back problems and such. He takes it to the mechanic we use and he charges $20 is all.

One place here does give a free car wash. I need to see how much they are.

bluecar
08-01-2009, 03:08 PM
See, that is the issue. I cannot think it is good for cars with iron blocks and aluminum heads to have cool oil poured into them. Probably why I see so many cars with head gasket issues.

Spider Monkey

So you heat your oil up every morning before starting the car?

bluecar
08-01-2009, 03:12 PM
So you heat your oil up every morning before starting the car?

No, but the block, heads, and oil are the same temp. The heads are usually treated so they cool slowly and not warp.

Head a pan up to 200* and then throw a cup of water on it....see if it warps the pan.

evildave101
08-01-2009, 03:12 PM
yea in what way does that harm your car

lack of oil pressure causes more friction=more wear=shorter engine life

but the lack of oil pressure for the fifteen seconds it takes for the oil pump to fill the filter after an oil change is really not going to hurt anything, but filling the filter before putting it on limits the time that the engine is not getting oil.
when you start the engine, all the oil is in the pan anyway and it takes a second for the oil pump to get it circulating-no oil in filter=a few more seconds to get it circulating

i fill the filter first, mainly because thats how i learned to do it

I learned that way and being around deisel engines that require 4 quarts in the filter alone, you can see why we do it that way.

Like I said, I don't think that there's anything inherently wrong with not filling up the filter...just filling it is "better". It may be because the article was for higher performance cars where things like that may matter.

I still don't think it's a good idea to drain the oil of a car that's still hot.

Above the pistons is where there is an explosion. There should be no oil there at all. If the oil is getting into the combustion chamber, then you have other issues.

maddskillzz
08-01-2009, 04:47 PM
most of your newer cars and trucks have the oil filter mounter sideways so filling the filter is not possible.....the oil pump starts pumping as soon as the motor turns over and it will have filled the filter before the engine starts...im cautious so i usually bump the switch a couple of times turning the motor over a few times before actually letting it start so some oil will get pumped back into the top of the motor..

No lie, at least half of you are on your periods and have sand coming from the vagina at the same time.

I expect a large group hug in the very near future.

Don't ever confuse my seriousness with my period :fyi:

If I have to bust out a tampon, the whole world will know!

And we can't do group hugs without HOSS.

I was asking where Hoss was so that the group hug could commence and all this hate could stop.

He is passed out which is why we are having so much of the hate.

He is at the lake, but he is not passed out, which I find odd. He said poast will commence tonight. So we can have a group hug then.

I know that larger engines require that you do that, when the oil filter looks like a can of Monster/Rock Star....but for most vehicles especially 4 bangers, there's probably 3/4ths of a quart still in the motor anyways, unless it was just rebuilt or something....

the fuck? that include oil and filter? either way thats fucked.

$15 for oil and filter and do it yourself. If you cant, these lube places are hurting for business. Most are 24.99 and offer a free car wash. My local Precision Tune does them for 14.99 every other week.

I pay about $35 for my 5q of mobile 1 synthetic and oil filter.

I wash my shit out with a water hose after I drain the oil. I don't have these problems.

I have to change my oil later tonight, gonna give this a shot, thx.

nothing new here. i just cant convince myself to pay so much for amsoil. i just use the bullshit motorcraft oil and filters you can get at walmart. its a semi synth (who knows how much is actually synth) that recommends a 5k oil change interval. good enough for me for only like $18

I use Mobile 1 5000 mile oil change. It's not synthetic, but does the 5000 mile thing.

i use castrol, or napa oil which is valvoline

bigtoyota479

Napa oil is the shit. Cheap version of Valvoline, and WILL NOT leave sludge. Penzoil sucks ass, don't use it.

As far as the filter goes, rule of thumb is: If the filter is vertical, fill it. If it's anything but, don't worry about it. Got 300K on my Yota with a side shot filter that's horizontal, never filled it, and still going strong. That 1 second without oil pressure won't hurt them, or really any car for that matter. Those that get your oil changed somewhere, they don't pre fill the filters either, just pre oil the gasket. :fyi:
