Did the fix with spacing out the heatsinks...just played it for about an hour, works well.

It's pretty easy to fix it yourself.

I've had it on for a good 4 hours since I did it with no problems.

it doesn't have to be under warranty for xbox to fix that, it is a manufacturing flaw, they will fix/replace it under warranty or not.

Not after 3 years.

I've had mine for ~4 years. It's out of warranty, even for the RROD.

Yeah, it's just spacing the heatsinks from the board.

microsoft shoulda got that shit right from the begining.

ms fialz.

fbi90909
08-18-2009, 02:54 PM
Yeah, it's just spacing the heatsinks from the board.

not really, the stock X clamp just doesn't provide the needed pressure for the heatsink to rest onto the cpu or gpu. after time when the 360 heats up the board will begin to warp and allow the heatsink to slighlty relieve pressure from the cpu and gpu allowing cpu and gpu to break their cold solder joints causing the RROD.
the X clamp fix if done doesn't necesarily space the heatsink from the cpu/gpu. that would be bad. not contact would leave you with an overheated 360 in seconds. instead if done properly it re-applies the needed pressure from the heatsink to the cpu/gpu while keeping the cold solder joints of the cpu/gpu intact. the application of a better thermal compound also helps maintain the 360's cpu/gpu temps a little lower than the stock thermal compund they use which isn't all too great to begin with.
overall, don't leave you 360 standing upright, it constricts the airflow into the 360. it chokes the 360 and increases the risk of having an X-clamp failure.
keep the 360 in a well ventilated open area, don't allow the exhausted hot air make it's way back to the 360. in example using a tv stand where the 360 sits in a partially enclosed cabinet area.

blah blah blah blah blah..

RS, what games you plays online?

Heh, guess my understanding of the fix was off, but nevertheless, it's working thus far. It's in a TV cabinet, but has a good 5-6" of space on all sides, and the back of the cabinet has a good size opening for air to circulate.

Is this the fix that you use?

I've only been playing Prototype of late, awesome game.

fbi90909
08-18-2009, 03:11 PM
never heard of prototype. :emb:

the fix i use is just 8 nylon/plastic washers, 8 zinc washers, and 8 bolts. i also use artic silver 5 thermal compound. out of all the 360's i've fixed only 2 have come back with issues that were RROD but not cpu/gpu related. there is also a process i do with re-flowing the gpu/cpu to re-attach the broken cold solder joints which helps the lifespan.

So when I have the 360 horizontally, it freezes. Usually within the first 10 minutes of playing. No RROD, just freezes.

I tried it vertical and put my g/f's laptop cooler under it, and it worked for hours- probably close to 6 hours straight, with no problems. Put it horizontal, froze again.

try this, go take 2 Qtips and cut one end off of them. then insert that cut end in the rear part of the 360 to lock up the fans. turn on the 360 and make sure the fans aren't moving. let it overheat. let it cool on it's own for 10-20 minutes, then turn on.

Well I've got the board wide open now, tried loosening/tightening the screws on the heatsinks, to no avail.

When I did that I unplugged the fans and let it overheat, then tightened down the heatsinks and it worked again...for a little while.

Last night I just left the top of the case off completely...still froze. It only freezes when playing a game, though. Watched 2 movies via my external HDD on it and it had no problems.

you can keep adjusting the heat sinks.

if you have a heat gun, remove all parts from the board, isolate an area of just the 2 main chips.. you will have to heat both chips(can be done one at a time). then allow it to cool on it's own. you must not allow heat from the heat gun to heat up the caps around the chips. you blow a cap you can kill the 360. though, doing this process you have a high chance of killing the 360 in general so it's a somewhat last resort. i've done this a few times and managed to kill only 1. lol, i later blew it up.
the way to isolate the chips is to use that blue sticky puddy stuff you use to tack up posters to walls, and heavy duty aluminum foil. do a number of layers of foil and make sure no "air leaks" are present. use a small fan to circulate air from around the board to remove excess heat, but focus the heat onto the chip. heat on low, at a distance of 6-8 inches for about 5 minutes then on high for another 3 minutes and pull back a little more.. then just let it cool.
if you do do this be sure the board is on a completely flat surface, when heating do not move the board.

do this a s a last resort if you get to the point of knowing that you just don't care of the outcome. lol. well sort of not care.

For 50 I would have added a second 20/30mm intake fan and channeled the air while hooking up a fan speed regulator.

Unless if he actually has a machine to reball/reflow the CPU/gpu solder joints(which the machines cost in their hundreds) there's nothing other than the xclamp mod. It just varies on who does it and how well the mod has been preformed. If he did reball/reflow it sweet, then that 50 is well worth it. But if he didn't that yes I would say you. Got jipped.

2, but for issues with a drive not working and another one that would just stall. The one that stalled had no fix other than reballing/reflowing which I can sort of do but not a fan of. The rest that I have worked on have never come back for an rrod issue.
