View Full Version : Play backups on Wii without voiding your warranty

I don't condone piracy, but I figure I can help those that do, since I just hacked up my friends Wii for him so he could.

You will need a retail CD of Zelda Twilight Princess to add homebrew and begin hacking.

A new system menu update is just around the corner(3.5 just released in other ocuntries) and there is no guarantee this will work when N drops the system menu update in the states, so you may want to try it quickly.

The hack involves using Hombrew Channel and various apps made for it.

I have found a great pack that packages it together with a nice PDF instruction file.

It is called SoftMii. DL it and follow the instructions crefully and you should have no problems. Except on step 12. Do step 13 first then 12 if you have system menu 3.4. the guide was made for people in the scene who were already blocking updates and keeping their machines on 3.2

Then with homebrew on you can also try apps other people have written for the wii at www.wiibrew.org like emulators for other older systems, then play the ROM from DVD or SD card.

No need to open up your wii and install a mod chip. This software can be uninstalled should you need to send your unit in for warranty work.

However, you use this information and instructions at your own risk.

The same places you find all your other warez. Or you could simply use the raw dump program in the homebrew channel to rip and send the iso of rented games to a PC over wifi. Or you can rip with one of the confirmed optical drives listed in the following thread.

Update.

No need for Twilight Princess anymore. With the 4.0 update from Nintendo brought a new hack possible while they patched the TP bug(lawl). It is the banner bomb. All you need now is the appropriate files and an SD card. If anyone is interested in having these files I can upload them somewhere for download along with the txt instructions. It takes 30 minutes before you are running emulators and have the ability to run backups.

For viewing pleasure here is a Wii I hacked playing a NES emulator.

No you don't use the motion sensing for older games. I suggest getting the Wii Classic controller for games in SNES, genesis era. It has the buttons and form of an older controller. However for NES and sega MS games the wiimote has enough buttons.

It has a directional, 2 joysticks, 4 mainbutons and 4 fore finger buttons. It gets the jobdone when it comes to classic games. They have 2 versions of it. On connects to the wiimote nunchcuk port and one is totally wirelss on its own. I use the totally wireless standalone made by datel and love it.

It is only limited by amount of time it can write/rewrite which is around 10,000 cycles. You could rewrite the data on it everday and expect most modern flash to last 30-50 years. By then it will be obsolete and so will you. Of course this is on average. As with anything it can simply just break the day after buying it. This is where backing it up is important. I back the SD card up every so often to the laptop.

I have still have my first Canon digicam I bought in 2000 with a 256MB Compact Flash card that still works flawlessly and the newer flash chips are nearly 5x better than used back then. You do the math. Of course the usual suspects can kill it(static, water, fire, monkeys), so your results may vary.

Then I just upload games onto the sd card and play them? The files you need to use can be found on demonoid. Do a search there for bannerbomb. If you don't have a demonoid account, then I will up them somewhere else for you to DL from.

With the files come instructions for unlocking the Wii. Then you can play game one of 2 ways. You download the game ISOs and burn them to DVD -R(I'm sure you know where to find these ISOs). Or you get an external hard drive and use WBFS manager (http://wbfsmanager.codeplex.com/) to move your downloaded ISOs to this external drive in the proper Wii format. Then install USB loader on the Wii and load the games straight from the HDD you put them on.

I actually have no idea how to do any of this stuff, thats why I ask, cause it would be cool to play some older games.

So I would d'l the games and just burn them on a DVD-R and put it in the wii and bam I can choose them and play them?

For the older games you just download the roms and put them in the SD card in the appropriate emulator folders. then you run the emulators from home brew channel on the Wii.

Downloading ISO and buring is just for all the actual new Wii titles.

Your first step is aquiring bannerbomb and following the instructions in it, then we can walk through how to use home brew channel after you have successfully done this.

pl8er

well I undid and redid everything. Works, I can play backup games but can no longer download updates which means no free opera browser. So how do I install a free browser?

I've wrote too much...gotta do a presentation in the morning so I am done for now. I have everything installed per instructions. Now how can I get it to let me do updates (using something downloaded via wad etc) I just want a fucking internet channel :P

I do believe you are supposed to do all Wii updates before you install the software. At least that's what I did.

Or, it may be a setting in that new software you installed. IIRC, it turns off Wii updates so you don't hose your hacks. Maybe browse through there and see if you can turn them on, get opera, and then turn them back off again?

Here.

I have the internet wad bro along with just about anything else you need. As far as upgrading sys menus, you can do it with fake signed updates from home brew peeps as they do them, but usually isn't necessary unless they add something in the we want. Most anything you want can be downloaded as wads from the usual channels, but I do has a lot.

Let me up the internet wad for you. Gimmee a minute.

I've missed you. I did just find the opera wad. Perhaps yours is a newer version?

Also, is there a way to have the Wii look in a network folder to play games or do I have to use thumb/HD to play? I have a rather sophisticated network, speed wouldn't be an issue.

pl8er
06-27-2009, 07:18 PM
and as far as hosting the files...I can give you access to my server so you can just drop them on my server if it would be easier.

The Opera channel has had no updates to it. It is a primitive and light browser.

I wish there was a way for it to do that, but alas there is not right now. Partly because the games have to beloaded from a propietary partition format which is dubbed WBFS(Wii backup file system). However, with a good burner, img burn, and 1x speed burning, you can burn the ISOs to DVD -R amd play back in disc channel with the exploit you installed. If you don't wish to use a USB HDD that is. Make sure to get the home brew Browser if you don't already have it as well. It is an application (.dol to place in app folder and run from HBC) that allows you to browse interesting applications submitted and accepted to homebrew. You will find all the emulators through the HBC browser and get updates to those apps from HBCB as well.

no it wasn't. That packet is very light on utilities. It is only meant as a springboard to enable you to mold what you want.

In fact you should delete the private folder in it now and the .dol located in the root of the card. Otherwise you won't be able to use the card to move channels to and load the channels from the card if you so choose to. In any event the banner bomb is no longer needed and those 2 items should be deleted to avoid any issues in the long run.

PM me server info and I can move the browser over there.

Should be LUXX

I just need those first 4 characters. I want to see if you are a possible candidate for bootmii. Bootmii is a much better safeguard than preloader but only Wiis befre mid 08 can use it. It attaches at boot2 before any othr software starts running hardware.

Probably your wireless then. Mine seems strong enough, but it is only a G in the Wii.

bigtoyota479

There IS wired on the Wii. However, it requires about 20 bucks, and they give you a USB to Ethernet adapter for it. I has no wireless, therefor that was a must. However, without wireless, I cannot finish setting up the homebrew channel. Quite the conundrum I has.

Well....I've been reading on the term "bricked" as I believe that is what has happened. I tried to load a dvd to play and it said didn't work...I then loaded homebrew to which it said "you need to download the updates" so I did that, then it said my updates would not update...so then I just ignored it and went back to wii. Then I went back to homebrew to which it said "hey download updates" so then I did and just uninstalled and reinstalled. Then it rebooted and said "corrupted, see your owners manual" So I'm thinking its dead?? Now my boot2 screen is still there but does that mean jack since we didn't save anything?

It was cool for a minute though....i could get online and all kinds of stuff. Just couldn't watch dvd's or get it to play any of the downloaded shit from homebrew browser.

pl8er
06-28-2009, 01:03 AM
Well luckily I had talked to Deman earlier, and since I have bootmii loaded I can still get in the thing. Just no actual Wii screen. I'm sure it can be solved. I'm thinking that Wii mods are > mii so once I get this fixed and can play downloaded games, i'm done fucking with stuff.

IamDeMan

UGGGH, never update when Wii asks. In fact Connect24 should have been off. I thought this was stated. In any event it is just a system menu brick I am assuming. Hit me on IM and we can work this out. We do have to get your NAND backed up as soon as we get the sys menu back up. From the video I have watched it should be pretty easy.

Yeah it was the homebrew channel. Everytime I loaded it, it would say "you have 1.01 please update to 1.03).

I'm loaded on IOS60 or IOS35 and it is working, but I'd like to have your stamp of approval that I have it all right and up to date.

Preloader should be running IOS60. The hackmii installer I gave you I thought had 1.03 in its installation, but guess I was wrong. I have never seen their update do that, so it must have lost connection or power hiccup in the middle. This is why we run the safeguards though. With preloader and BootMii you are 99.99% safe from non recoverable bricks. We do need to get your NAND backed up in case of IOS losses. It seems very easy. Just need to click the icon with the gears and choose to backup nand to SD. After it does that I would copy the NAND dump you get to your server for safe keeping as well while retaining a copy on the SD.

I was reading that just now actually! Good call on the upgrade. Get me the model and make if you would. I'm interested on if it is LCD/Plasma/DLP....me personally, I do not think any of them are perfect...they all have pro/con's.

First thing is always make sure preloader gets on(and that the process deosn't fuck up in the middle of that install). Then see if BootMii installs as a boot2. Run a NAND backup. That is what needs to be done before having fun. If you monkey around without protection, you will find your Wii has contracted Turbo Aids.

More than likely not a .11 series. Honestly though, it has more to do with RAID setups. The drive suffers from extensive periods causing the controller to think the drive has died, then it rebuilds the array, THEN the drive comes back and it may start to rebuild yet again.
