View Full Version : Question: ITT Pl8ter or Sex Cells Will Explain Drywall Finish
Spider Monkey
09-30-2009, 02:44 PM
Pl8ter because he redid his bathroom like I am going to do and Sex Cells because he's my Home Depot bro. Others are welcome to chime in.
Current situation:
Sink top mounted to wall and runs the distance of the wall over the cupboards and toilet.
Future mod:
Remove all that shit and put in a stand alone cupboard with waterbowl sink not attached to wall.
Question:
When I tear the current sink off the wall, the drywall finish I assume will be destroyed. How do I make it as though nothing ever happened so I don't have a stripe of bad going across the wall when I repaint?

wait, I think you mud/spackle and sand the wall

I dont understand what you mean it runs over the toilet... Maybe a picture/diagram is in order here. Is it a standard countertop sink or a pedestal?

Run a knife/5 in 1 tool around the perimeter of the sink to break the caulk seal and you should be able to pull it off with minimal damage. Scrape/sand everything flat, touch up any areas that may need it with some joint compound, let that dry, sand it to knock the texture off, repeat if neccesary, paint, ??????????????, profit.

yeah i don't think the drywall will be destroyed as you think. disconnect all the tubing and IIRC there should be like 2 bolts that are holding the sink to the wall. after you remove those bolts and the caulking around the sink is off you should be able to LIFT the sink up off a brace that's mounted on the wall. remove that brace, mud/spackle the holes left behind, sand, paint, and install cabinet/sink top..

This is assuming it is a pedestal. I am still awaiting clarification.

depends on the quality of the current sink. More than likely it is just against the wall, not into the wall. You may need to paint. Pics would help though.

How am I going to mud exactly the same way the other mud is?

Counter top sink. Like this bitch, only on the left of the picture, it would extend and go over the top of the toilet too. It has to be connected to the wall somehow.

Right, we are on the same page, except I would sand it flat thus having a flat line of wall going around the room where as everything else would have that normal texture.

I'm not worried about the drywall silly. I'm worried about the texture on the drywall under the paint. The sink and the counter are one piece as displayed above.

Walls are textured? Or are you talking about that very small texture?
If you are talking about the little bit of bumpyness that is on most all walls, you can get that back by using a paint roller. The nap of the roller will leave teh texture.

No, repainting a mocha color.
FML I'll just have to take real pix to show you guys.
Oh, textured stuff, never messed with that, probably never will...
Nearly impossible to patch that shit seamlessly. Good luck tackling that by yourself. Worst case scenario, post it up on CL and find someone willing to re-apply the texture.

How fitting. You're painting you bathroom a shit brown color. It'll give you a real shitty feeling while in there. Really sets the mood IMHO.

Yea.

Yo shit.
You would still have to blend that border into the textured area, would kinda stick out IMO. You could sneak some chair rail in there and that might work.

5 inch wide chair railing??
You could do a chair rail with a backing. Would look better than a wall papaer border IMO.
Or you could try just scraping it flat and sanding it smooth, and then painting a border. Its gonna be a PITA to get that area flat and leave teh texture next to it though...

Save yourself the headache and hire someone. Do as much work as you can by yourself, then hire someone to come in and texture it.
Only gonna be frustration if you try to do it yourself. If the wall was flat and you were texturing the whole thing it would be different, but trying to learn how to texture and blend at the same time, fuhgeddaboudit.
It wont cost that much more to have a handyman come in and patch the texture in that area.
