Lot's of good LT's this year. Those are game breakers, give the QB more time to throw and help RB off the edge.

Roadtrippin'
03-10-2009, 04:27 PM
Yeah, if you can soliidfy that spot and have the need then that is always a spot worth spending a high draft pick on. It also seems to be a position that is easier evaluated than others.

I'll be honest, I watch them every week and I can't say for certain that a good RB will fix the problem. The line does a good job in pass protection, but the don't seem to dominate the LOS in rushing plays. It's just hard to say, it's been a while since Deuce was healthy and even before that they were wasting running plays feeding the ball to Reggie.

I think the amount of touches that you saw toward the end of the season is more indicative of what you will see this season. I have been hoping that he would see the ball more from the begining of his rookie season. That year he was awesome during preseason. So was Lance Moore at WR. But then the regular season started and neither got much of a chance to play.

Then last year both played and did well. I really don't understand Payton sometimes. I don't know whether there are good reasons for holding a player back or whether he is just stubborn. Robert Meachum (WR) is fast as hell, has had some great catches, very high YAC and yet his playing time is very limited. The common belief is that he has problems with the playbook. To me that is just unexecusable, if you have a guy with the skills he has you just do what it takes to coach him up, even if he is near retarded. In any case, if he follows the pattern of Moore and Thomas then you can look for Meachum to have a breakout season this year.

Well he has that, plus he knows how to read a defense, make checkdowns, and good decisions. When you have a QB at that level it's impossible for any fan to appreciate the full scope of what he does on the field. There really are not that many QB's that get to his level. I would guess that at any one time there are only 2 or 3 that combine that level of understanding of the game along with the skills to take advantage of it.

If they want to sign Sharper they are going about it in a strange way, IMO. I would have thought that if they were going after him they would have done it while there were more FA options. IDK if that rationale is sound, but is seems like he would have more negotiating power at the moment now that the FA options have dwindled.

Roadtrippin'
03-31-2009, 11:14 AM
I think they would love to trade down, but I think they will have to get lucky to find a partner that is willing and able to make a deal that is worthwhile. It may be that Detroit is their best hope. Detroit might take an OT with their first #1 and then want to take a QB at 14, giving up their 20ish pick and maybe a second rounder. Who knows, that's just BS talk.

I personally don't want to see them take a RB with #14. I am not sure Wells is worth it.

I don't think they feel like they are set on D. The safety help they picked up does not offer long term solutions. I think if Jenkins is still there they take him, but who knows.

Per My ESPN:

Saints shopping for backfield help?

Upon the release of Edgerrin James earlier this week, the New Orleans Saints were mentioned as a possible destination, given the Saints' current backfield situation: somewhat untested Pierre Thomas looking to build on his 129-carry 2008 season, and electrifying yet injury-prone Reggie Bush as the X factor.
There's another option if the Saints don't land James, that being a trade. In his Diner Morning News column today, Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post throws out the possibility that the Saints could be calling teams around the league to assess the availability of some superfluous runners. In particular, Lombardi mentions the Denver Broncos, who have a veritable army of backs on the roster after a free-agency bonanza and the drafting of Knowshon Moreno; the Dallas Cowboys, a team that will begin 2009 with a three-headed monster in the backfield if no changes are made; and the New York Jets, who have yet to appease Thomas Jones with a new deal.

Of those three, the most likely deal would be made with the Broncos. The new management duo of coach Josh McDaniels and Brian Xanders has proved it doesn't let emotional ties get in the way of improving the team, as franchise quarterback Jay Cutler was first denigrated in the media and then traded away to the Chicago Bears. To this end, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Broncos trade away some other holdovers from the previous administration, and either Peyton Hillis, Ryan Torain or Selvin Young could be had on the cheap.

The Saints don't have much to spend under the salary cap - some estimates have them about $2 million under the cap number after signing their rookie class - but that could be enough room to sign Edge to an incentive-laden deal. Failing that, a trade would seem quite likely.

Um how long did the starters even play?

A pretty good while.

But the thing is the team looked good throughout the depth chart.

Our backup QB's did better than some starters for other teams.

Is Thomas going to get the bulk of work in the backfield?

Need to decide if I should keep him in my keeper league..

I expect he will, but keep in mind that the Saints are going to pass, pass and pass. They are one team that really can abandon the run. To be honest, the O-line is great at pass protection but really do not open holes consistently.

In the aftermath of Saturday’s disaster, veteran defensive end Greg Ellis openly wondered if his teammates were taking their profession seriously enough as in getting the proper rest and being physically and mentally prepared to play a game.

“Guys, you can’t stay out all night. Can’t expect to come in here and just turn it on,” Ellis said. “This isn’t high school or college football. This is the best of the best in the NFL. So you’ve got to do the small things that maybe you didn’t have to do in college.”
