View Full Version : Question: How-To Request: Installing a GFCI

Normally, receptacles are EZ sauce. However, I can't figure this issue out.
I'm installing a GFCI where a normal receptacle was installed. The old receptacle had a single hot wire, which was wrapped around the line, and two whites, which were each on their own post.
In my genius, I cut the black wire to have two black wires.

Now, I've tried it both ways, and I.E. pair of Wires coming from X way on top, and the other pair on bottom. And also switching them.

With one, the LED light comes on on the GFCI. However, there's no power going through the outlets. I checked the guide and it said, if this is the case, I put the wrong wires in line / load. But, when I switch them, the outlet gets no power.

I'm at a loss.

I have 2 neutrals and one hot.
Not two hots and a shared neutral.

Is there a switched outlet nearby?

No.
This circuit controls a receptacle out in my living room, two in my brother's room, and one in my room.

There's a bunch of sites that explain what to do with a shared neutral, but nothing about a shared hot.

That has two pieces of "hot". I tried that, and it didn't work.

I just pulled the socket out...
Coming in from one side there's 4 wires. Two blacks, one white, and a red.
Going out the other side there's 2 wires. A black and white.

Coming in, one of the blacks has a wirenut on it, and the red does, too.

What the fuck?!

That sounds like a switched outlet, though they're usually blue.

Possible 220v also.

Possible 220v also.

From what I read, the red wire is 220v.

Porch Monkey
10-29-2009, 12:42 PM
No, for it to be 220 you would need 2 hots and a neutral and/or ground. In your case the black is 110v and the red is 110v.

Porch Monkey

Id's use 12awg min, 10awg would be better if it's for 220v.

How 220v works with 4 wires: (one wire to each)
1 Black wire carries 110v
1 Red wire carries 110v
1 White wire acts as a common
1 Green wire acts as a ground

How 220v works with a 3 wires:
1 Black wire carries 110v
1 Red/White wire carries 110v (if you use white flag it with red electrical tape)
1 Green wire acts as a ground/common

(If you have 4 wires in the wall, but you are wiring them to a 3 prong receptacle, connect the green wire to the green "ground" screw on the receptacle or if no ground screw is present, attach this wire to one of the receptacle mounting screws. That way if the common fails, you still have the added protection of a ground)

I do know what I'm doing. At least, in terms of basics. And I'm not stupid. I always test and the like.

I've just never heard of four wires before. Only 3. Two power and ground.
This house is wired very poorly, though.

Do you want just that receptacle as a gfci, or all that are on the circuit after? Do you have a meter?

IDSkot

I am having problems. I ended up putting in my old outlet 'cause I need it.

BTW: Installing this because I set up a reef tank and I'd like the added safety. However, it's been with out lights for like 2 days and everything's dying.

If all you want is that plug you don't need wires on the bottom. The top screws are the line, bottom are the load.
You had one black and two whites on the old plug right?

Yeah. Exactly.

Should I just put both whites on the top and both blacks on the top? (Top as in line.)

brynm
10-29-2009, 01:37 PM
Nope, the black wire will gert connected to the brass colored screw, if you cut it ( I think you mentioned you had) pigtail it (tie them together with an extra wire free to hook up to the GFCI). do the same thing with the neutral (whites) that wire will go on the silver screw.

Get a meter and sort it out! If you don't have a meter get one, they are super handy.

I think you should get a professional to figure this out for you... Before you burn down the house or kill yourself.

Also, there's another GFCI in the circuit.

I thought you weren't supposed to have more than 1 GFCI on each circuit? Also, it needs to be the first plug too, IIRC my code correctly. If there is already a GFCI on the line, it should protect that outlet, and all the others, just dandy. No real need for two, IMO. Right?

You can have more than one, I deal with the Canadian code though American could be different. If the other one is installed earlier in the circuit and the plug is wired off the load side then it will protect them. Easy way to check that would be to push reset then see if you have power on the plug you're concerned with.

If he only wants that plug protected he should have wires only on the line terminals ( top ones). That may have been the problem earlier, if he had the black hookedup to the top and one white on each screw it wouldn't have worked properly.
