I honestly don't know probably depends on the software. I looked into it when I first joined CA but lost interest and money.

Well if you don't get a touch screen, your going to need a keyboard.

and probably a mouse. Only problem with that is if i leave it in, it might drain the car battery. Doesn't seem likely but i've heard of that shit happening.

I was over there but got kind of lost and didn't want to join. The only reason i'm contemplating non touchscreen is because someone is selling one for 65shipped over on ca.com

I have a wireless keyboard that has the mouse built right into the kayboard kind of like a little joystick. Bought it for my HTPC but ended up getting a PS3.

It runs on batteries so it lasted a few months in between changes. To be honest though I think touchscreen is the way to go.

I looked into it a long time ago and then realized, "meh." but the above listed forum about mp3car.com is a great place to read up on them.

Baller. I wonder how much it costs to put together a carputer.
Mine was a little under a grand.

In-dash dvd/navi units just don't compare.

I have full seasons of Seinfeld, Family Guy, Reno 911, The Office, Sunny in Phila, and about 30 movies, on top of XM and navi. And about 30 gigs of music. It's pimp.

Touch screen is better. Purely for the fact that you don't have peripherals all of your car. You can get a scroll ball, but those get dirty and start to malfunction quickly.

But, if you want, get a normal one.

The only problem is O/S. You can run Windows, but it'll take a while to boot. They have some O/S specifically designed for cars. But they're somewhat costly and are hard to come around on the internet (for freezilla.) However, if you know how to run LINUX, I'd recommend Mythbuntu. It's a form of Ubtuntu, which is a disgrace in itself of Linux since it's so processed it's basically XP v.2.0. But, it's pretty light in terms of OS, and it has a Windows Media Center O/S type of interface that would work well in a car application.

And if you're building a PC specifically for a Carputer, you want a lot of RAM. That'll help the PC boot up and load faster. A faster RPM HD wouldn't hurt either, but can be costly.
But, remember when you mount everything, put rubber boots on it to ease the vibration a bit.

Booting is not a problem- simply set it to hibernate. Mine boots up in 15-20 seconds.

And less ram=quicker boot from hibernate.

We need Meglo over here...isn't he the king of carputers?

I have everything needed minus the power supply. Just don't have any interest to do it in my old ass car. New car in the fall so I will most likely wait until then.

Very simple to do though. I would most likely go with an atom processor now anyways. Via was my chip of choice in the past.

Well, the only problem with that is it drains your battery. If oyu have a battery bank, or a battery isolater, then I'd definitely do that. But if oyu're just running one battery, I wouldn't.

Power supply is a misnomer... it's actually a power converter. The one for your car generates a smooth 12v, 5v, and 3.3v. Which, isn't really hard to do. I'm not really sure why they cost so much. I guess because they need to beef it up to handle the amperage.

Even sitll, it has to take it's power from somewhere. If you're saying in response to my post.

No, what I'm talking about sends the shutdown command to the computer and also the turn on when the car starts up. That way your not doing a cold boot each time.

Like this:

While in deep sleep mode, M1-ATX constantly monitors your car battery voltage levels, preventing deep discharge situations by automatically shutting down (using a built-in shutdown controller) until battery levels reach safe levels again. No more dead car batteries, no more computer resets during engine cranks, along with multiple timing schemes, small formfactor and very competitive price makes the M1-ATX the premier solution for DC-DC ATX vehicle / Car PC power supply solutions.

M1-ATX is formfactor compatible with VoomPC Car PC enclosure and with most Casetronics and Morex enclosures .

NOTE: Do not try this PSU with Pentium 4s, works with all VIA mini-ITX boards and some low power Pentiums and AMDs, please check your motherboards specs and make sure that the CPU is not getting V(core) from the 12V rail, must be from the 5v rail. Stay away from motherboards that have 4 pin 12VATX connectors, that that is a good indication that the M/B is using 12V for V(core).

I use the M1-ATX.

Supposedly there were a lot of problems with it, but I've yet to have a problem and I think I'm going on 3 years with it running.

Boots PC 5 seconds after car has been started, shuts it down 5 seconds after.

I'll post some links to my carpc build from a few years back. I've still yet to clean up the install, I'm a lazy fuck.

That would be a hell of a lot of work just to extend the ribbon cable to be used in the dash. Not to mention the fabrication. I think he would be better off buying a dedicated touchscreen.

There are smaller keyboards you can get, or you can get an IR remote and use something like IntelliRemote and it's teletext functions to do whatever you need. Or get software with an on-screen keyboard (requires a touchscreen, of course). Lots of options out there.
