I was gunna get a Q. But I think my next upgrade will be IDMax. Not sure, though. Not even sure I'm gunna spend any more in car audio. Not unless something in my car blows. I do, however need a ~600 RMS @ 8 ohm amp. After that, I don't think I'll make any more purchases.

I would do an IDmax over a Q any day of the week. I have listened to quite a few of the IDmax subs and they all sounded wonderful, even off little wattage and still got decently loud. So very efficent.

Also I have been saying I won't be doing any more purchases for years.........yet, I keep doing it. :(

ha ha ha...I concur with this statement. Originally, I needed speakers and was following the boner train on them, then when I wanted to upgrade to something better I had no $$ now I just don't want to F with the car at all because I'm going to be getting rid of it in the coming months. They really do sound great for the money though.

Symmetry is awesome. Very easy to make adjustments on the fly and it isolates the ground really well for no feedback.

What did you use to hold those rings in there? Something like JB weld or fiberglass?

I used a couple drops of rubberized CA glue to hold the rings in position for aiming. Once I got the aiming where I wanted. I used plastic filler aka flexable bumper repair epoxy( the black stuff around the rings). Scuffed up the pillars real well, then filled in the area with the filler. Simply put, once cured this stuff is plastic. To remove the rings after using this stuff I would have to cut. Then I used good old reinforced filler to build up the areas around the rings to smooth the transitions. Easy as pie, took me about 2 hours start to finish including sanding time :)

bigtoyota479
07-10-2009, 11:15 AM
Yeah, that works. I didn't think bondo would work on plastic that well, so I was curious. I will store that away for a later date.

ramos

Yeah, that works. I didn't think bondo would work on plastic that well, so I was curious. I will store that away for a later date.

You can make it stick a lot better by scuffing the crap out of the plastic and using an adhesion promoter. It sticks well enough that I had to sand the filler back off the plastic to re aim the new tweets. I couldn't seperate the filler from the plastic :)

bigtoyota479
07-10-2009, 11:37 AM
I thought you said you used epoxy bumper filler? Bondo is something totally different, it's a ployester based resin.

ramos
07-10-2009, 01:06 PM
I thought you said you used epoxy bumper filler? Bondo is something totally different, it's a ployester based resin.

I used plastic filler to adhere the rings to the pillars themselves. I used bulldog adhesion promoter very liberally on the well scuffed plastic pillar.
Then used upol fiberfill to build everything up. It is a poly based filler as well. Bondo is just a name, which does happen to make the epoxy bumper repair I used. I could have used the plastic epoxy for buildup, but the amount of buildup done, would have required $100 worth of the plastic epoxy at the quantity available. Where as I ended up using $8 worth of the upol and $.50 or so worth of adhesion promoter. The problem with adhering to plastics is the sometimes oily, non porous surface of the plastic. You can some what remedy the non porous part by roughing the plastic up and or drilling many small holes for the filler to form small "rivets" in. The oily part on the other hand, Plastic is a petroleum based product. Clean it as well as you can before hand with acetone or something. But an adhesion promoter is a really good idea to try and put a barrier between the plastic and the filler, that the filler will adhere to. :)

bigtoyota479
07-10-2009, 01:23 PM
Yeah, I gotcha. I use Bondo as a generic name for anything that's a plastic body filler. It sounded like you had something else up your sleeve that I didn't know about.

The adhesion promoter is a must when bonding to plastics because of the oil in them, yes. I've done a lot of body work in the past on cars, but never anything in the interior. New shit to learn=good.
