so what would u recommend for me if i get a ps3?? also, games that have sequels ( uncharted 2, assassins creed2) should i buy part 1 and play them first or it doesn't matter?? was there ever a 'left for dead' made for ps3? and the only sport games i would probably play is 'ufc' or 'fight night' but i don't know for certain.

if it helps, the main game i played on my ps2 was 'true crime: streets of new york'. even though i beat it, i played it over and over afterwards cause i liked it so much. i had 'scarface' but i didn't play it ccause i didn't have the instruction booklet for it.

You don't need to, but Modern Warfare was a pretty good game too. They are geared for multiplayer though so some people find the story a quick play.

You can play, I enjoy them.... but you can beat them fairly quickly. MW2 I've only played about 3-4 hours I think and I'm about half of the way through.

console gaming > pc gaming

consoles are dedicated machines FOR games, unlike PC's that you would have to build up for games. the upside about PC is that some games can be customized and or hacked for customization where as console games are not. downfall with PC is you CONSTANTLY have to update and purchase mroe and more and more expensive hardware to keep up with new releases. of course you can build up a pretty decent machine, but overall, you're going to want more knowing that you can gain more, so in the end, your blowing more money..

i've gone thru the PC gaming route and buit up my machine. right now, i prefer all my games on the Xbox360..

120gb ps3 from gamestop costs about $282 <--- this is with the tax included

i wish i could watch blu-rays with an xbox360, it even up the stakes

is it worth it to buy a 20gb ps3 with bw compatibility and upgrade the harddrive?? the dude at gamestop said u could do it, but if u DL new firmware or software for it, you will lose the emulator that makes it possible for bwc. is this true? why would somebody need new firm/software anyway??

brynm

Some of the newer games will force you to upgrade FW. Not sure about losing compatibility though.

After a quick look at google, it looks like you wouldn't have a problem... also iirc the 20GB models were hardware based so it should be golden.

what did u google? if i put a new a hd in one, i won't have to DL new firmware then? and whats the diiffs between the older ps3 and the newer/slim ps3's?

brynm
01-16-2010, 09:27 PM
No, FW is not stored on the drive, looks like it is just a matter of swapping drives.

The newer PS3's do not have BWC, the slim uses about 40% less power and runs cooler than the old one. I googled "updating firmware lose backwards compatibility" and saw posts from people that updated Dec '09 saying they have no problems still playing PS2 games.

Here's the steps for replacing the drive

http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3media&message.id=59228

Section 1: Stuff You Should Know

Throughout this guide you will see several terms that you may not be familiar with:

Byte = The most basic unit of storage on a Hard Drive
Format = The process of deleting and restoring a Hard Drive
GB = Gigabyte
HDD = Hard Drive
PS3 = Playstation 3

When you do decide to replace the HDD, please note that replacing the HDD will NOT void the warranty

Section 2: About Your Current Hard Drive

The actual definition for a GB is 1,073,741,824 bits of data. Sony realizes this and programs this into the PS3. However, The HDD company uses the common definition that a GB is 1,000,000,000 bits of data. 1,073,741,824 bits multiplied by 60 GB is 64,424,509,440 bits, but 1,000,000,000 bits multiplied by 60 is 60,000,000,000. The difference is about 4.5 GB which is why your PS3 says 55 GB when your box says 60GB.

Section 3: What Do I Need to Replace a Hard Drive?

There are only a few things needed to replace the current PS3 HDD.

Phillips Screwdriver
Flathead Screwdriver
Hard Drive
20 Minutes

When you buy a HDD it must have the following specs: 5400 RPM 2.5 Mobile SATA Hard Drive

Section 4: Before Taking Apart Your Hard Drive

Before you take apart your PS3 to replace the HDD, you must transfer any data you may want to keep.

Option 1: Copy files to an external HDD
Option 2: Copy files to a USB Flash Drive
Option 3: Copy files to a Memory stick of some sort (60 GB model only)
Option 4: Link your PS3 to a PC and copy the files

Which ever way you choose, (this only applies to options 1-3) you may need to do several transfers from the PS3 to a Storage media, to a PC to get all of the data you want.

Section 5: Disassembly Here are the step-by-step instructions on removing the HDD from the PS3:

1. On the side of the PS3, there is a small, black plate that you can pry out with a regular (flathead) screwdriver
2. After doing this, there is one screw in the center to remove
3. That will enable you to lift the small metal lever up so you can slide the HDD (and it's cage) to the right and pull it out
4. Now remove the 4 screws on each corner of the cage to slide the HDD out

Section 6: Re-Assembly

Here are the step-by-step instructions putting the HDD in the PS3:

1. Slide the new HDD into the cage, and replace the 4 screws to secure it in place
2. Place the cage (with the HDD now secured inside) back into the PS3 and place the lever in it’s down position
3. Replace the screw in the center
4. Replace the cover
5. You may now plug in you PS3 and proceed to the next section

Section 7: Formatting

When you put the HDD in as described above, and turn the system on. You will see a message asking you if you want to format. Select yes, then on the next screen select yes and wait for it to finish. When it is done it will say Press X to restart. The system will then restart.

Section 8: Re-Transferring the Data

To re-transfer the data you copied by means described in Section 4, simply copy from your other storage media or PC back to your PS3. Updates to system firmware will have to be reinstalled as well.

That drive should be good, if you're planning on putting a ton of media on the drive you may want to go bigger. Personally I'm using my 160gb model as straight gamer / BR player so 160GB is way more than I need.

One thing I noticed about the 20gb model that I was going to point out before was that it doesn't have wireless built in. Not sure if that's important to you.

Ok. First off, the backwards compatibility is hardware based, NOT software based. They took the actual hardware for the compatibility OUT of the slim PS3, hence the slimness and cooler running.

Next, I would highly recommend you get a new hard drive that is 7200 RPM instead of 5400 RPM. Much faster, and hardly more expensive. Also, I suggest you use a website like Newegg.com instead of Best Buy to get your PC hardware. Yeah, you have to wait for it to arrive, but Best Buy anal rapes you on PC stuff.

Oh, I liked the FEAR games on the PC, but haven't played them on the PS. If you want something fun and easy and a good time killer, the Lego series games are actually pretty fun too!

Cabela's big game series was fun on the PS2, but I haven't done the PS3 ones, so that may be a crap shoot.

Oh, and if you're a geek like me, Final Fantasy XIII is a must have this March as well. Fallout 3 on the PC was bitching, don't know about the PS3 version though. Should be the same story and all.
