Was curious if anyone here happens to have one, or has worked on one. I am seriously contemplating building one in the summer, and was just looking to see if anyone had any tips or suggestions.
I definitely prefer the trucks over the cars, though I still think the cars are bad ass. I was also maybe thinking of just buying one, what kind of price do you think it would be for a decent rat rod that was nothing too fancy. Also, would this really be able to be a daily driver, or just something to bring out of the garage every now and then. Regardless, I am keeping my blazer, so I was just curious.
Here are some that I found that are teh sex.

That's what I am hoping for. I'm actually looking at buying a 1937 ford truck body right now, but I have no where to store it atm. I'd really like a 1940's stude as well.

nice that thing looks sick. the 37 ford might be a little easier to get some of the little small parts for but i think the stude would be some thing that not seen that much making it more cool . the body is going to be about the hardest to find in good shape . as far as the frame you could probity have it made to fit the body . now the engien and trans you can go with just about any thing you like. the tires and the rims ide go with classic industry's they have allot of styles to chose from

I'm looking forward to hopefully getting this started this summer. I'm probably going to go with a cheap rebuilt 350 if I can find it, should be loud enough. And as far as the wheels go, I'm probably going to go with some classic solid rims with white walls.

Is it a law that if you own one of those you must have your wallet attached to your belt by a chain?

Only in some states, I here it is wishy washy here, so I might have to be on the lookout. :sneaky:

lol they seem like cool guys they hang around this tattoo shop here and I swear all of them have those chain wallet things for some reason.. they also do shitty tattoos but I am in a small town so I would not expect much else.
Would you be doing most of the work yourself or are you looking for something that is already built?

Depends, I would love to do the work myself, but I also would need someone there to show how to do some things. My really good friend of my grandfather happens to know how to do all this shit, but the only thing is, is that he has cancer and seems to be getting worse every week.
Another factor is time, I'm not sure if I will have enough time to devote to working on this project.

a decent rat rod that was nothing too fancy
Rat rod and fancy don't belong in the same sentence. The point of a rat rod is to be ratty, but cool at the same time. A guy locally brings his out once in a while, and the whole thing was sandblasted to let it look rusty, riveted sheet metal in different places, and put small cuts in the valve cover seals to give it that piece of shit look. It's badass though cause the motor is BUILT as hell.
I wuv rat rods.

Doesn't that defeat the purpose of letting it get a "patina" over time from just aging? :D

Yeah... but human randomness + natural randomness = epic randomness.

Instead of overnighting parts from Japan, for these you'd be overnighting parts from Cleveland.

"Nothing too fancy" means not spending $20k for a rat rod, nothing with an expensive ass engine/tranny combo, and so on and so forth

This defeats the purpose and is retarded IMO. You don't take a nice car and turn it into a piece of shit that happens to go fast.
You take a piece of shit and make it go fast. That's the point of a rat racer.
Find a beat to hell body, and spend all your money on the drivetrain and sometimes suspension.

Just don't really understand the whole dropping all kinds of money into the mechanical stuff and then making it look like its beat to shit, or leaving it look beat to shit. If it were me I'd want a nice clean body with nice paint.

calling your ride a 'rat rod' is just an out for if you've tried to build a hot rod but didn't have the skills/attention to detail to hack it.

you could always pay someone else to do the body/paint work and have an actual hotrod.

rat rods are a part of the hot rodding culture. back in the day people built their rods purely for speed and didn't care half as much for the look of it. that is how the rat rod culture began. people built their own shit to go fast and not to look good.

I know not all of them are. But then theres the people that want the look so they "distress" their car to make it "look" like its been abused.
I don't mind the concept at all, I'm the same way with my own car, performance comes first, but its when they take it too far and actually try to make it look like that that I don't like.

I can agree with you there, it is rather ignorant. But I do like the natural weathered look.

the point of doing that is so you can have the rat rod look and still maintain the reliability of a restored hot rod.
