As far as specs, I'm looking for something very similar to this

http://cgi.ebay.com/Toshiba-Satellite-P505-S8945-Laptop-w-Windows-7-HP_W0QQitemZ260546722838QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLaptops_Nov05?hash=item3ca9cb7c16

for cheaper price.. around $400 - $500ish?

If you're interested, I could trade for my desktop. I'll be able to get the specs tonight on it, but it has 500gb hard drive, 22" monitor, and other things that I'll update on when I get back from class later on tonight.

Also, gaming isn't important. Will mainly use for my music, internet browsing, school projects, and possibly movie watching every now and then.

If your not worried about gaming, why are you going with 6gb RAM and such a large screen?

More information than anything, trying to figure out exactly what you need.

I just thought bigger numbers were better. See, I need you guys. I know I need a lot of memory for my music. I have 4 garbage bags full of mp3s (lolwut) and am always expanding. I just have a thing for large screens, not really sure.

large screen will pull your battery life much faster. My personal opinion is that 6gb is WAY overkill on a laptop. 4GB is plenty as long as it has a dedicated graphics card. If you are sharing, 6GB makes sense.

If you are okay with battery that is sub-par...a large screen isn't an issue.

There's a new Toshiba out for only 480 bucks. 250 GB HD, 2 GB DDR3 RAM, 7 hrs battery life. Whatchoo think?

Not enough RAM and too small of a monitor for him.

the ebay link was a good deal imo. More than you wanted to spend, sure, but retails for about double the price it went for.

Still a bit out of your price range though.

If you want a desktop replacement, you're gonna have to spend the bucks. If it were me, I'd look into a smaller ultraportable for writing papers and listening to music, and keep the desky for doing other things. Gonna be really hard to do in your price range.

Agreed. You will not get a desktop replacement (unless it is older technology) without going into the 600-900 range.

Still will not be a true DTR. I'd suggest a slightly smaller screen with decent ram and dedicated graphics.

Hmm... any good refurbished units you can point me to? Cheaper the better. Also, what do you mean when you say it won't be able to take the place of a desktop? Would features would I be missing out on?

Just overall processing power really.

I don't consider you a power user, but you are looking at power user speeds.

Yeah, I'll look around for a refurb. Also, don't discard netbooks. My netbook does everything I need it to do without the hassle of size and has a huge battery. You would still have a desktop.

I would recommend that Toshiba over a netbook. Bigger screen and more horsepower. Not that much more money either.

I mean, if I were to buy a lappy, I would want to get rid of my desktop. I'm trying to downgrade on some things. I wouldn't mind a netbook really, I just don't want something so small I have to have a magnifying glass to fap.

You get used to the 10" screen pretty quickly. You can always dock it with a larger monitor when your at home though.

yeah though, parents have that toshiba (got it for them for a present) and its awesome. Dedicated graphics card plenty of RAM and overall a quick machine. Does GREAT on win7

How's the battery life IRL situations? It says 8 hours.....really that long?

pl8er
02-08-2010, 02:33 PM
5-6 normally. I'm going to guess 8 would be no wifi, no 3d usage and running a single program only.

Still 5 hours running normal usage is decent for its size.

Ya, and LED backlighting for the screen makes for a good crisp picture too. It's still only a single core, though. Can you get a dual core for under 500 bucks?

You want to get rid of the desktop and keep one pc, I'd recommend getting a monitor for when your at your desk.

what is MAX you will spend (I know lower the better but there is always a limit)

That all depends on how much I can get out of the desktop. It works great, but I need something I can take with me. I'll try and remember to take a look at the specs when I get home.

Basically, I want a laptop. Screen size? I'd say at least 12". Over 300gb memory. Core 2 duo would be nice since when I do use a computer, I'm usually doing at least 3 things at once. Like right now, Firefox, Word (x3) and powerpoint. If this was my personal computer, I would also have iTunes going. Don't want any delay. DVD player would be nice. I think thats about it? Oh yeah, high battery life would be great.

dvd player kills off a netbook, they are driveless.

Your pc is going to get you almost nothing in terms of $$. Pc's retain no value.

I would. Unless you need mobility. If so, spend 250 bucks and get a netbook as a spare. But for a DTR, you need to spend some loot.
