Cutler upset over potential deals to Detroit, Tampa Bay
By Adam Schefter
There’s one story behind the trade of Matt Cassel to the Chiefs. There’s a whole other story behind that blockbuster story.
While New England and Kansas City were agreeing to Saturday’s trade of Cassel to the Chiefs for the draft’s 34th overall pick, there were more teams in the mix. Detroit, Tampa and Denver were involved in trade talks of their own also tied to Cassel, according to sources in the respective NFL cities.
Tampa approached Denver to try to make a three-way trade that would have sent Cassel to the Broncos and quarterback Jay Cutler to the Buccaneers. The Broncos entertained the notion and pondered it but ultimately decided against it.
Also, the Lions approached the Broncos about a trade for Cutler, trying to dangle Cassel as bait. Once again, Denver debated the deal and opted against it apparently. What made it a moot point was that while all Tampa, Detroit and Denver engaged in trade talks with New Engalnd, the Patriots went ahead and dealt Cassel to the Chiefs.
The Broncos firmly maintain that they never intended to trade Cutler, that they were approached to make the trades. But, as of Saturday afternoon, Cutler was angry to hear that his name had been floated in any trade conversations.
Now the Chiefs have Cassel, the Broncos still have Cutler and the Lions and Buccaneers continue their search for quarterbacks in one of the wilder and more complex behind-the-scene drams the NFL has seen in any recent off-season.

Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler said Sunday night that he will not report to the team's first meeting on Monday and has formally asked to be traded. He confirmed that a Saturday meeting with first-year coach Josh McDaniels ended badly from his perspective while McDaniels offered another viewpoint on Sunday night.
"I went in there with every intention of solving the issue, being a Bronco, moving forward as a Bronco," Cutler said. "We weren't in there but about 20 minutes, [McDaniels] did most of the talking and as far as I'm concerned, he made it clear he wants his own guy. He admitted he wanted Matt Cassel because he said he has raised him up from the ground as a quarterback. He said he wasn't sorry about it. He made it clear that he could still entertain trading me because, as he put it, he'll do whatever he feels is in the best interest of the organization.
"At the end of the meeting, he wasn't like, 'Jay, I want you as our quarterback, you're our guy.' It felt like the opposite. He basically said that I needed to tell him if we can't work this out, to let him know," Cutler added. "I thought he was antagonizing me and that was disappointing because I was ready to move on, committed as a Bronco. Really, I figured we'd hash things out, shake hands, laugh a little and move forward. What happened [Saturday] was the last thing I expected. If I didn't think it could be fixed, I never would have come back to Denver. It was painfully obvious to me and Bus [Cook, his agent] it's not something they want to fix."
Consequently, Cutler instructed Cook, who also attended the meeting, to formally request a trade. The quarterback said he left town late Sunday and would skip McDaniels' first team meeting on Monday as they begin their offseason program.
Broncos owner Pat Bowlen told the Denver Post on Sunday that he was disappointed with how Cutler has handled the situation. In a telephone interview with ESPN, McDaniels was reluctantly expansive on the story.
"I really have wanted to avoid a he-said, she-said thing but it's only fair for us to present the Bronco side of the story rather than let things get taken out of context," McDaniels said. "There's been a pattern here for the past two weeks the way things [have been represented] in our communications. I don't think anythng that happened [Saturday] was out of the ordinary. At the end of the meeting, Jay said he had thought about things quite a bit and requested a few more hours to mull things over. He said he wanted to talk to Bus on how to proceed. He was gonna call me on my cell phone and that never happened. Instead, Bus called [GM] Brian [Xanders].
"Again, I think that's been a pattern. I couldn't get [Cutler] to talk to me for two weeks or to talk to Mr. Bowlen. Then when he came here this weekend, we couldn't get a one-on-one meeting, just me and him alone. He wanted Bus in there, so I had Brian sit in, too. And it was the four of us. There wasn't any yelling, none of that. I can't believe we get to a totally different [interpretation].
"It's an unfortunate set of circumstances that has cropped up, a potential distraction and we've done our best to limit that. The main message I want to get out is that we're excited to start our offseason program [Monday]. It's an exciting time for us."
Cutler won't be present at the team meeting.
"I certainly went back there, expecting I'd be there [Monday] but not now," Cutler said. "It's not mandatory. I'll attend every mandatory mini-camp and training camp but that's it. Really, it's best for me to move on. As coach said, he needs every eye in the meeting room to be on him and not me."
As McDaniels pointed out, Cutler had a completely different expectation when he left their private meeting on Saturday.
Cutler said: "You know, even after the meeting, I hung around town, kind of expecting him to call me and say, 'Hey, let's just me and you get away and have lunch or a cup of coffee' and mend things, but that didn't happen. So, I get it, really, it's a business. I'm disappointed beause I love being a Bronco but I think it's run its course."
Cutler denied recent reports that he had asked to be traded when the Broncos fired offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates.
"Yes, I was upset when they let Jeremy go because Mr. Bowlen had assured me when Mike [Shanahan] was fired that the offense wouldn't change because it was the second-ranked offense in football," Cutler said. "But I didn't push for a trade then."
McDaniels and Cutler agreed on at least one element of the controversy, knocking down a Sunday report on NFL Network that the coach had criticized the quarterback's play in 2008.
"That just isn't true," McDaniels said. "Not a word has been said about that."
Cutler added: "Josh has never said anything negative to me about my play or anything else, for that matter."
McDaniels admitted that the team got involved in trade discussions for Cassel, who instead was dealt to the Kansas City Chiefs. However, he said any perception Cutler felt that the team could still trade him was misleading.
"That's what we have communicated ever since the deal with Cassel didn't happen," McDaniels said. "Other teams have called but we're not interested in getting draft picks for Jay. I never made a statement [Saturday] that 'you can be traded at any time.' They asked a question and I told them it was the time of year when people inquire about your team. Your job, as a head coach and general manager, is to listen and not bypass any opportunity to help your team improve. I think most people [in the NFL] feel the same way. You make smart, educated decisions that are best for your football team."
Cutler feels like McDaniels lost his credibility with him when he initially denied to the quarterback that the Broncos tried to acquire Cassel only to admit it later.
"Before this trade for Cassel thing ever came up, in the two weeks or so I had spent with McDaniels, he was basically telling me that he came to Denver because he wanted to coach me and that we needed to trust each other," Cutler said. "He's never been critical to me. But trust now? How can I trust him now?"
He also explained that his house being put up for sale was "nothing more than a coincidence."
"I had already shown my house privately to some interested buyers a couple of months ago," Cutler said. "I've really been looking to buy 40 to 70 acres of land there."
As for ignoring phone calls from McDaniels and Bowlen, Cutler said: "Josh and I have exchanged text messages. We had a conference call. And if Pat wanted to speak to me, why didn't he come to the meeting on Saturday?"
Cook said that as an agent he was "totally in shock" that it has gotten so ugly.
"I would have bet my house going into Saturday's meeting that everyone would be shaking hands and smiling," Cook said. "I thought it was going to get worked out. But it was very clear to me that Jay Cutler is not their choice to be quarterback of that team."
Yet Cook admitted that when he called Xanders to request a trade on Saturday night, the team's general manager said it wasn't going to happen and that "Jay should show up Monday."
That wasn't going to happen, either.

With none of the top quarterbacks in the draft pool picking him to be their agent, Bus Cook had to find a way to get his name into the NFL conversation in the weeks leading up to the 2009 version of the rookie selection process.
What better way to do it than to demonstrate his power and influence to the quarterback class of 2010 by forcing a trade of Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler?
Dan Patrick said on the Monday edition of his show that Cook recently responded to a report from Peter King that Cutler had asked for a trade before the possibility of trading Cutler ever arose with the time-honored non-denial denial: “Not that I know of.”
We’re now convinced that Cook is the primary instigator of Cutler’s discontent — and also the primary impediment to a meaningful coach-player meeting that could resolve the situation and keep Cutler around.
King told Patrick on Monday that coach Josh McDaniels still wants to have a one-on-one meeting with Cutler.
In other words, McDaniels wants to be able to talk to Cutler without Cook sticking his nose into the discussion, saying and doing things that will prevent Cutler’s currently stubborn resolve from weakening.
Indeed, a league source tells us that Cook’s idea for solving the current impasse was — what else? — a fat new contract for Cutler. If the Broncos aren’t willing to give Cutler a new deal, then Cook and Cutler want to be traded.
Cook is a West Virginia native, so we’d ordinarily be inclined to give him the Pat White treatment. In this case, we can’t. Cook has been at the center of too many unnecessary controversies, and he has failed to use his tremendous influence over his clients to persuade them to find a way to make things work. Instead, Cook has thrived of late on destroying existing relationships, for no apparent strategic reason other than to get his name in the paper.
That said, it’s not too late for the Broncos to take control of the situation. As pointed out in our latest SportingNews.com item, the Bengals did it last year with Chad Johnson, and the Cardinals did it last year (and might do it again this year) with Anquan Boldin. When a player is under contract for three more seasons, the team (not the player) has the power to determine whether the player will be traded or released before those three years expire.

LAST UPDATED 03.16.09
Denver Broncos QB Jay Cutler is getting jerked around like a Shetland Pony at a six-year-old's birthday party.
Just to recap: Incredible young talent leads team to second-rated offense in the league last year. Has seven 300-plus yard games and one 400-plus yarder. Does it all while going through seven different running backs and a defense with more holes than a Tyler Perry plot. Makes the Pro Bowl. Becomes the leader of the team.
Then his coach gets fired. Then the guy calling his plays leaves town. Then he finds out his new coach -- a 32-year-old rookie -- is shopping him for a trade. In the NFL, if you're thinking of shopping your star, you better not get caught.
But the Rookie got caught.
Only The Rookie lies about it -- says he was only "listening to offers." Then, in a face-to-face with Cutler, the coach flip-flops. Says, "Yes, we were trying to trade you, so what?" Cutler gets torqued and says so. The world starts calling Cutler a "baby" and reminds him that "this is a business."
But now Cutler sees he's not wanted, can't trust his coach and is no longer the leader in his teammates' eyes. So his career is suddenly dropping like GE stock. His ability to perform has been shredded. So he says, "Trade me," and now he's spoiled? He needs to shut up and take it? How come it's a business for everybody but Cutler?

McDaniels on Cutler: ‘He’s our quarterback’
http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/03/23/mcdaniels-on-cutler-hes-our-quarterback/
Posted: NFL Network | NFL.com Staff | Tags: Denver Broncos, Jay Cutler, Josh McDaniels
Broncos coach Josh McDaniels sat down with NFL Network’s Scott Hanson on Monday at the NFL Annual Meeting and spoke about … Jay Cutler.
“He’s our quarterback,” McDaniels told Hanson in an exclusive interview that will air Monday night on NFL Total Access (7 p.m. ET).
McDaniels went on to say, “we need to keep the line of communication open” with Cutler, who asked to be traded last week after becoming upset over the team trying to trade him without his knowledge.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/peter_king/03/22/owners/index.html
News Item: I don't see Jay Cutler getting traded.
That's my feeling after talking to the involved parties for a (insert shameless plug here) Sports Illustrated story this week. Now, I can't say with conviction that Cutler's going to be the Broncos' opening day starter, but I do think coach Josh McDaniels will exhaust every avenue to try to get Cutler to stay, and I do think nothing's going to happen here. Funny thing is, around the lobby and meeting rooms, I couldn't find any coach who thought the Broncos should even think of trading Cutler.
"Say you're the Broncos, and Tampa Bay offers you two ones [two first-round picks] plus [second-year quarterback] Josh Johnson for Cutler,'' one NFC coach told me. "Denver makes the deal and picks a quarterback with one of the ones. You've traded the best young quarterback in football for two guys who might have a chance, but might be washouts too. Denver's problem is they could never get fair value for him.''
I called Charlie Weis, the Notre Dame coach and mentor of McDaniels, and asked what I considered the biggest question McDaniels must ask himself as he figures how far he'll go to keep Cutler: If I have to kiss this kid's feet and kowtow to him to make him feel comfortable enough to stay, is that any way to form a coach-player relationship with the most important player on the team?
"It's a rhetorical question, but it's one I definitely would ask,'' said Weis, who left the Patriots' for Notre Dame in 2005, ceding the offensive coordinator's role to McDaniels. "That thought would go through my mind. You've got to be able to coach a quarterback, and coach him hard. You don't want to start your relationship that way.
"Look, I'm not taking sides here. I know Josh very well, and I don't know Jay. But the one question I would ask is: Why wouldn't anyone faced with such a big decision not go have a one-on-one meeting with the coach? It's common sense. Even if you end up telling the guy to go to hell, don't you have to actually talk face to face, alone, before making such a huge career decision?''
Last week, the venom from the Cutler camp was so toxic I said I thought he'd have to be traded. But it was interesting here, listening to former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice speak to the body of league people (including McDaniels) and media here Sunday night. She talked at one point about how "history has a long arc,'' and how you have to take a long view of things. If you're always chasing the day's headlines, she said, you'll eventually become so reactionary that you'll ignore long-term good for short-term satisfaction, and you'll fail. I was thinking of McDaniels and Denver management. I think, like Rice used to do in the Middle East, the Broncos will exhaust all diplomatic means. And with agent Bus Cook on record as saying Cutler will report to mandatory mini-camps and training camp, why trade the guy, there's certainly no reason to do anything fast ... even if that means you don't have a definitive answer on Cutler by draft day.
Cutler's value has been equated to 2 1st round picks and 1 elite player. No team out there either has that, nor wants to give up the farm for him.

What's funny is Bowlen, the owner, stated right after he fired Shanny that the Goodman's who were father & son that had the GM titles, and the offensive coaching staff would all remain intact, and he was going to hire a defensive minded coach.

I have tried to troll you, and you have failed to rise to the bait.
However, the more I see of the HC the more I think he is nowhere near ready for that job. I think he would have had a hard time to begin with, but now with this mishandling of the team's young, Pro Bowl QB, I doubt he can succeed in Denver.
IMO, it was an idiotic idea to trade Cutler. Even if the trade goes through, you are risking a great deal. If Cassel failed, the team was going to catch hell. In fact, when you are replacing Cutler, then "failure" for Cassel would be defined very broadly. I think he would have to be a top 5 QB before fans would agree with the move. If he drops down even to just a top 15 QB fans are going to be pissed.
Even now, the coach's statements that Cutler is their guy sound qualified.

I guess I could be wrong, but Cutler seems like a QB that has lived up to the rather high expectations for him. I don't know why you would give that up in the hopes that another QB can do as well.

It looks like everything will be okay:
With Cutler on the trading block, the Broncos are down to Chris Simms and Darrell Hackney at quarterback.
Simms, who signed a two-year, $6 million free-agent deal ostensibly to serve as Cutler's backup, has thrown just two passes since undergoing emergency surgery to remove his spleen after a game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2006. He spent the 2008 season as the Tennessee Titans' No. 3 quarterback and played in only one game.
Hackney's next NFL pass will be his first.

Krieger: McDaniels shows audacityThe Cutler sweepstakesPossible replacements for CutlerBroncos' Jackson not surprised by Cutler newsTimeline: A look back at the Jay Cutler sagaBroncos to "begin discussions with other teams"Pat Bowlen is fed up.
And as Broncoland has come to understand during this tumultuous offseason, when Pat Bowlen has had it, people pay with their jobs. The most important of people.
Jay Cutler, the Broncos' star quarterback, is all but gone. Frustrated at what he perceives as Cutler's unwillingness to communicate, Bowlen announced Tuesday that he has given his front office permission to begin the process of working on trading Cutler.
"Numerous attempts to contact Jay Cutler in the last 10 days, both by head coach Josh McDaniels and myself, have been unsuccessful," Bowlen said in a statement. "A conversation with his agent earlier today clearly communicated and confirmed to us that Jay no longer has any desire to play for the
Denver Broncos. We will begin discussions with other teams in an effort to accommodate his request to be traded."
This is no April Fool's joke. Bowlen was referring to a conversation Tuesday morning between Bus Cook, Cutler's agent, and Broncos general manager Brian Xanders. According to a source close to Cutler, Xanders told Cook he had better get in touch with his client because Bowlen wanted to speak to his quarterback. By Tuesday evening, Bowlen had reached his breaking point.
Thus, Bowlen, in the 25th anniversary of owning the club, has dismissed iconic head coach Mike Shanahan and is about to dump his franchise quarterback in the same offseason. Shanahan, who had been the Broncos' coach the previous 14 seasons, was fired Dec. 30 and replaced 12 days later by McDaniels.
Here's a twist — while Bowlen was declaring the end of the Cutler era, Shanahan sank a hole-in-one, according to his former attorney Harvey Steinberg. Shanahan got his first hole-in-one soon after getting fired by the Oakland Raiders in 1989.
Cutler had heard about Bowlen's statement Tuesday but said by text message, "I'm not talking about it."
A source close to Cutler said the quarterback was surprised by Bowlen's declaration. In recent days, Cutler had packed up his car in Nashville and had it shipped to Denver, where he intended to show up for the team's first minicamp April 17-19.
The source added that Cutler said he has not received phone calls from the Broncos since he received a text from McDaniels a week ago Tuesday. Whatever the interpretation, Bowlen decided to exercise his ownership powers and end all confusion. He's the boss, and he says the team will trade Cutler.
The Washington Redskins are among the leading candidates to pull off a deal for Cutler. The Redskins have a proven young quarterback in Jason Campbell and would meet the Broncos' preference of dealing Cutler outside their American Football Conference. The Redskins also have the No. 13 selection in this year's draft on April 25, one spot behind the Broncos.
The New York Jets also have been aggressive in their pursuit of Cutler. The Jets, who have extra picks in the third and fourth rounds, are better stocked for the upcoming draft than the Redskins, who don't have picks in the second and fourth round.
Four other National Football Conference teams — Tampa Bay, Chicago, Minnesota and Detroit — have previously expressed interest in Cutler.
Suddenly, a situation that was both unthinkable and inevitable is about to occur. Unthinkable because Cutler is only 25 years old and was voted to the Pro Bowl during only his second full season as a starter. A young, franchise quarterback is considered the rarest
Pat Bowlen (Denver Post file photo)of commodities, to the point of almost becoming untouchable for trade.
Almost. For as the trading period opened late on Feb. 26, McDaniels discussed a proposed three-team deal that would have sent Cutler to Tampa Bay and former New England quarterback Matt Cassel to Denver.
The deal never materialized, and McDaniels said discussions never got serious. But Cutler was disappointed upon learning his coach had thought about dealing him. More significantly, Cutler came to distrust McDaniels to the point that two subsequent clear-the-air conversations between the two only intensified the young quarterback's displeasure.
On March 15, a day after Cutler and Cook met personally with McDaniels and Xanders and a day before the Broncos began
Josh McDaniels (Denver Post file photo)their offseason conditioning program, Cutler formally issued a trade request.
The stormy relationship seemed to calm a week ago Tuesday. McDaniels repeatedly reiterated to a large media gathering at the NFL owners meetings in Dana Point, Calif., that he wasn't going to trade Cutler. They would work it out. He's the Broncos' quarterback.
After that press gathering, Cutler, who has been staying in Nashville through most of the offseason, told The Denver Post he and McDaniels were going to talk that night. The two exchanged text messages, but both sides agree a conversation never took place.
McDaniels had said last Tuesday that he had received messages from other teams inquiring about Cutler, but the team wasn't responding. It appeared then that the team would wait until its first minicamp before reaching its breaking point with Cutler.

ESPN NEWS - the Broncos have announced to all interested teams that they will accept nothing less than 2 first round picks for Cutler...
They also said the Broncos said that a QB is NOT neccessary in return...
And lastly they mentioned the Broncos are NOT interested in the #1 overall pick...
Per Denver Broncos's front office - The official asking price for Jay Cutler are the following draft picks:
2 1's (2009/2010)
1 2,4 (2009)
3(2010)

IDK, that's kinda crazy. I can understand starting your negotiations from a place that gives you room to move, but why broadcast this everywhere for the fans to see? It seems like that would give them unrealistic expectations so that they are just that more pissy when you finally make a deal.
Or maybe they are sabatoging the trade on purpose. But that doesn't make sense either.
