ive been told different things by different people. how exactly should i treat my laptop and charging the battery?
1) charge the battery fully, unplug, and use the laptop until the battery is almost dead, then recharge and repeat
2) leave it plugged in at all times, except when i want to take it with me
3) just randomly plug it in to charge, not worrying about charging it to 100%
do these effect the life of the battery?

1. Do this for 3-5 cycles after you get a new laptop or battery.
2. NO! If you're going to leave it plugged in for extended periods of time, take the battery out until you're ready to use the battery.
3. If you want to kill your lappy battery, sure.

I always leave the battery out when at home on cable. it stays that way 99% of the time.

ahhh, so thats another option, just pull the thing out.
honestly that seems like the one that makes the most sense. why even put the battery in if you dont need it.....

If leaving the battery out for extended periods of time, charge it to 100% before you take it out.

ive read on a couple of sites now that you do not want to store it at 100% charge. supposedly they say the ideal storage charge is 40% of full.
from batteryuniversity.com
If you have a spare lithium-ion battery, use one to the fullest and keep the other cool by placing it in the refrigerator. Do not freeze the battery. For best results, store the battery at 40% state-of-charge.

another one from a different website
Lithium Ion
Moli Energy Lithium Ion Battery Storage: Storage temperature range is -20 to 60° C. Recommended storage voltage range is 4.1 to 2.0 volts per cell. For prolonged storage periods, store discharged [i.e. 2.0 to 3.0 volts per cell] and at -20° to 25° C.
Panasonic Lithium Ion Battery Storage:
The batteries should be stored at room temperature, charged to about 30 to 50% of capacity. We recommend that the batteries be charged about once per year to prevent overdischarge.
PowerStream Note: Test data confirms that storage of lithium-ion batteries is best if the cell is partially discharged. In one test by Cadex Electronics ( http://www.buchmann.ca ) after 1 year storage at 25°C the non-recoverable capacity remaining is 96% when stored at 40% initial charge level, but only 80% if stored with 100% initial charge level. This effect is reduced at lower temperature and is a non-issue at 0°C. At higher temperatures the effect is much worse. Cadex's recommendations are to store below 15° C at 40% of full charge (2.5 volts per cell).

had my hp for almost 2 1/2 yrs before it died again. i always charged it full and unplugged it after it was charged and ran the battery down to 10%. there was nothing wrong with that battery and it held a charge just fine.

Li Ion batteries don't have the same problems as older rechargeable. Yet some of the magic battery myth has followed them. So, basically just cycle it once in a while, don't let it drop too low in voltage, make sure it doesn't overheat, and you'll be just fine. Everything else is pretty much voodoo.

they do degrade fast. which could be where people are getting the idea of a memory from..

They don't have a memory, per say, but they must be cycled properly a few times from the get go. Leaving them in the lappy with it plugged in to the wall can overheat them and kill them. Also, they aren't just LiIon's, they are LiPo's as well, which are treated differently than the others.

Well it is a trade off... We buy about 200 new rechargeable batteries every year for our two-way radio rental fleet. Li-Ion have been still holding in the 90% capacity for about 3 years now. A NiCd gives us about 2 years and NiMh a little less.
But, we also run everyone of them on a conditioner/analyzer twice a year and store them in the off season in their 'factory' state. Which is a low state of charge.

Heat is the issue with a Lithium battery.
