View Full Version : I want to extend my wifi range for my laptop

There is a library 0.3 miles from where I work that puts out a free wifi signal I would like to drop down on. There may be even something closer in the neighborhoods. Is there anything I can hook up to my laptop to generate this kind of output?

First of all you aren't generating any output, you want to increase or boost sensitivity of receiving a signal you fucking moron. For laptops you will be limited. Your best bet is to look up some parabolic antenna for laptops or make a cantenna.

Thanks fatass.

I have a really simple trick that easily allows for you to boost the internal power of your wireless card and more than likely grab that signal.

However, you have insulted ma BOI and I will not be assisting.

It's cool bro. I call him dumbass and he calls me fatass. Both contain fact so there is no insults being had.

However, settings for the card in windows I doubt will yield a favorable outcome getting a signal .3 miles away. He will need a directional along with tweaking imo.

Look for a stronger directional instead of that 5dbi omni.

This is entirely correct :fyi:

The problem with a laptop is that you don't run into cards that have external antenna connectors a lot (a favorite for portable use is the Orinoco ones). So you'll have to get something that has an antenna jack (likely an SMA connector) to be able to use an external antenna that's worth a damn.

Making a cantenna is a piece of cake, there are even kits on Ebay that have all the required parts so you don't need to shop for connectors and coax separately. I used one of these in college, and I was able to pick up the school's network easily from my 3rd-floor apartment, and I was farther away than you.

The biggest thing you can do to improve your range is get any kind of antenna up high - Wifi works on line of sight, and the higher you get the antenna, the more signals you'll be able to receive. A popular choice for outside installations is the grid-style dish you used to see for microwave TV service:

http://www.citytechnology.com.au/microbeam/images/19dBi%20Grid.jpg

For something like that, just make sure to get really low-loss coaxial cable or some kind of preamplifier right after the antenna - losses in the cable are huge at 2.4GHz.

Of course, what do I know...

Here is one that is an adapter instead of just an antenna if you want to go that route.

You want a good signal to the library, point a directional antenna at the library

Exactly. Like when I peep in your widows I choose a tree that isn't blocked by other trees between it and your house. Otherwise I get leaves and branches in mah way at the wrong times. Seriously impeding the purpose of my perch.

That is what I would do. feed the signal to something then redistribute so you aren't tied to a location for the laptop.

Can even use an old shitty desktop with wifi adapter internet sharing - wifi router

Signal comes in wifi adapter on desktop then share through wired to router and broadcast.

I would do that because I have these things. However, I pay for my damn pipes instead and lock them down from thieving bastards like the dumbass in the OP.
