Windows Version
1. Download the Android SDK from Google; Android SDK | Android Developers.
2. Extract all the files in the ZIP file leaving the directory structure in tact.
3. Connect your Hero to your host PC via the supplied USB cable. Follow the HTC manual on loading the USB drivers as necessary.
4. Go to the directory where you extracted the Android SDK and execute the 'DDMS.BAT' file in the \Tools sub-directory which will launch the Dalvik Debug Monitor program.
5. On the Dalvik Debug Monitor program's 'name' list, if you do not see your Hero listed, then your 'USB debugging' is turned off on your Hero. To turn 'USB debugging' on, go to Settings/Applications/Development on your Hero handset and toggle 'USB debugging' on and you should then see your Hero listed on the Dalvik Debug Monitor.
6. On the Dalvik Debug Monitor highlight your Hero on the 'name' listing and then on the menu, select Device/Screen Capture. Or, you can just hit <CTRL-S> if you want.

Okay, Download this recovery image. You will be flashing this to your phone.

Then open the command prompt. Navigate to your android sdk/tools folder by typing in:

Download the Android SDK from http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Extract the files to your C: drive so that you now have the folder C:\android-sdk-windows.
Download the asroot2 exploit file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta…2&d=1257621154
Extract asroot2.zip to the tools folder within the android-sdk-windows folder.
Make sure USB Debugging is off by going to Settings>Applications>Development. Now connect the phone to your PC via USB cable and re-enable USB Debugging.
If your computer does not automatically install the correct drivers and prompts you to select them, you will need to run the SDK Setup.exe (read the full instructions in SDK Readme file). Browse to the android-sdk-windows folder. You should see a folder called usb_driver. Select the appropriate driver for your system (ie 32 or 64 bit). If you had to install the SDK, you will need extract asroot2 file to the tools directory again.
Open a command prompt found under All Programs>Accessories or by typing cmd into the search box and pressing enter.
You will now enter a series of commands which I will place in parenthesis to indicate the entire command. You may copy and then paste them into the command prompt window by right clicking. Do not copy the parenthesis.
1. “cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools”
2. “adb push asroot2 /data/local/”
3. “adb shell”
4. “chmod 0755 /data/local/asroot2″
5. “/data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh”
You should see an output that says:
$ /data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh
[+] Using newer pope_inode_info layout
Opening: /proc/857/fd/3
SUCCESS: Enjoy the shell.
#
Now for a few last commands.
6. “mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system”
7. “cd /system/bin”
8. “cat sh > su”
9. “chmod 4755 su”
You are now officially rooted. A few more steps and you will have flashed the recovery image!
Inside type “exit” and press enter and then do it one more time. This should cause the cmd to return to C:\android-sdk-windows\tools. Alternatively you can exit the cmd prompt and open a new one and enter “cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools”
Time for some more commands.
1: “adb push recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img /sdcard”
2: “adb shell reboot” (this will cause to power off then back on automatically) Wait for it to boot up all the way.
3: “adb shell”
4: “su”
5: “cd /sdcard/”
6: “flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img” This takes a while. Wait for the prompt to come back.
7: “reboot recovery”
Last Step: This is the last command (you may now close the cmd prompt) and will cause your phone to boot into recovery mode. The second option on the list is “Nandroid backup”; select it. The phone will prompt you to press HOME to confirm which is want you want to do. The backup will begin. You will see the screen say, “Performing backup : ……….” When done, the bottom of the screen will say “Backup complete!” and you will be given the menu options again. Select reboot system.
Once your phone is fully booted, mount the sdcard. You will see a folder called “nandroid”; I highly recommend you copy this to your pc in case you lose your sdcard data or reformat it. This step is optional.
