Well I could see it as a Point of Sale device, HT, or Home Automation remote, Portable internet device and such. The concept has been around for some time. The purpose of a Netbook was a small device that is convenient to carry, giving you access to the net at all times. The Tablet is just making the device smaller and more portable.

And since they are running a lighter OS, faster, easier to use, less start up time (since they are designed to be left on all the time, unlike a netbook), and also less intrusive to use, since everything is on one plane, as opposed to a netbook.
