This sounds stupid.....but when you are done ask yourself how data is processed and say it out loud. Think of installing windows

DVD to Motherboard Motherboard to harddrive harddrive to motherboard motherboard to ram ram to processor processor to video card video card to monitor.

This will help you to realize if you haven't put something in or if something isn't attached correctly.

MOBO, RAM, processor and heatsink/fan, power supply, and dvd burner are in.

Now question. With the HDD's, which slots am I putting them in to?

There's 4 sata 6gb/s slots, 3 of them are blue.

Listed next to them on the motherboard are:
1) SATA_0, SATA_1
2) SATA_2, SATA_3

and so on.

I have two separate HDD's, one for the os/programs, and the rest for my media.

Don't plan on RAIDing them.

I think i figured it out. The white port is for 3 gb/s HDD's and the blues are for 6 gb/s.

Now, my main HDD is a 3 gb/s, and the bigger one is 6gb/s.

Do I HAVE to put the 3 gb/s HDD on a 3 gb/s port?

No. Backward compatyibility bro. A 6gb/s port will run a 3gb/s drive just fine. The drive won't hit it's theoretical on either port anyway.

Question....

Can I hook up both my dvd burner and my old IDE harddrive onto the same IDE cable?

I wasn't sure if that was a no no or not.

And if I can, can I then boot off a file on that HDD? (i downloaded win7)

Updated drivers, MUCH better. :)

I'll have to post up some pics of the assembly.

lowest WEI subscore is 4.6, and that's my graphics. Not really surprising.

Processor: 7.3
Memory: 5.9
Graphics: 4.6
gaming graphics: 5.6
primary hard disk: 5.9

As for the list, i did make a couple of changes.

Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 955BE
RAM: G.SKILL 2x2gb
HDD's: WD 640 gig primary, WD 1 TB second. Both black editions
Same MOBO as before
PSU: antec earthwatts 650w

Total came out to $693 shipped. :)

I downloaded win7 and some activators off TPB.

The activator made my win7 genuine. :)

I read a lot of the reviews before downloading and some people have been running it for months without issues, even when downloading updates.

Worst case scenario is that mine goes bad and I have to purchase a legit version through a student.

meh at your choice in mobo. i would of gone with MSI or ASUS if you had the dough.
nice case though. lots of ventilation. my bro has the same looking case but his is a full tower.

where's your video card???

For the time being I'm using the built in video card (radeon HD 4290).

Some time down the future I'll perhaps get a dedicated video card and take advantage of the crossfireX capability. :)

Doubt I'll need it though as I'm not a gamer.

you'd have to restart the computer. usually somewhere on the bottom of the screen in the first moments of the boot up it'll says press such key to enter bios or to enter setup or something. as for what you need to do, i don't remember as i haven't installed an sata hd in quite some time. :/

if it's right out of the box it should pop right up as a mass storage drive as it's in the secondary position behind the HDD w/the OS.

Exactly! Drive is just raw right now. Needs to possibly be assigned a drive letter and formated.

Also, Avira has the highest detection rate (you guys know we have a search and all that neat stuff here, right?)

The one pc linked in here looks like a fucking circus. Never understood the lights. Do you take it places and show your friends? If not, why waste the energy and decrease the life of the components through the heat that is added?

negative. Gives me the same choices as in the screenshot.

I think deman might be on to something with the RAID.

Well post up your ideas guys, I gotta go to work so I'll try and deal with this later.

I haven't built one in a while so I don't know if anything changed but you used to get two different drivers for raid chips. One to use as a standard controller and one to use it as a software raid.

I think you can just choose to convert to dynamic and just make it a simple span with one drive without reinstalling some drivers though.

Well one option it does give me when I click in the big white part of the 2nd drive in the bottom is to create a "new simple volume".

Could that be it?

Ok, now that the hardware situation is figured out, lets move on to some programs. :)

I need a media player, music player (preferably separate), and a good free antivirus.

I've usually stuck to the old, trusty winamp for my music player, but I wouldn't mind trying something new.

avira and mediamonkey downloaded. :)

Question, is it possible to have a little desktop icon like winamp for mediamonkey?

I liked having winamp on the desktop because it didn't take up much space.

Find it in your list of programs. Right Click, Create Short Cut. Drag new shortcut to desktop.

Sorry, not a desktop shortcut, what I meant was how winamp was a small application (think AIM) that you could have on the desktop and it wouldn't get in the way of anything.

Are you familiar with winamp? Or AIM?

I used to have my winamp right next to my aim list. Instead of taking up the whole screen, winamp had a small footprint like an AIM buddylist.

Yes.

If that is what you mean, shrink down the damn window. Close it. Next time it opens, it should only take up that much space again.

And for the record, you're still wasting your time with winamp now. You just got WMP for free.

don't have winamp.

And like I said, i want to have a separate player for music ONLY so I don't have to keep farting around with the settings to watch vids/go back to playing music.

My winamps in the past were always about the size of a car stereo on the screen. Dunno why yours is so damn big.

Because I always had the playlist and equalizer opened up as well. That's the way I liked it.

I never install AV software. It slows shit down too much, never works like it should and fucks with a bunch of my software and has to be disabled most of the time anyways. I never reboot so it would probably just stay disabled constantly.

Another example of why I hate AV software hit yesterday. I reloaded my uncle's Dell like 6 years ago with Windows XP.

I went to his house because he couldn't load FB in FF (but could load webmail) and he couldn't load his webmail in IE (but could load FB).

After about an hour of clicking shit and waiting forever for responses, after uninstalling and reinstalling tons of software; I had that ohh-so-familair gut-feeling..

I went to his taskbar, disabled his AV and BAM!, everything started working like the reload was done yesterday.

Like I said, fuck AV.

Seriously? What kind of AV was it?

Yours looks nice compared to mine.

I need to do some cable maintenance. Just put in a new storage drive and video card which is my excuse. It WAS organized and pretty at one point in time.

MOBO: ASUS P6X56D Premium
PROC: Intel i7 960
MEM: 6GB Mushkin (Want 12GB of something faster)
HD1: WD VelociRaptor 150GB 10k RPM
HD2: WD Black 640GB 7,200 RPM
HD3: Seagate 2TB
VID: Gigabyte ATI HD 5870
PS: hec Zephyr 1000 Watt
Case: Gigabyte GZ

Woot! I wish I would have gone RAID, but the Raptor will have to do.

Was the raptor really worth $150?

I seriously don't know if I could see a noticeable difference between that and the WD caviar black I got instead. It just seemed way too expensive for the size.

Everything loads up super fast, I don't see how it could get any faster really.

Really the only difference is the random seek times. So, if you keep your drive defraged there really isn't much difference.

If I had to do it over I'd go 2x Blacks in Raid that way you actually get increased data rates.
