You can almost picture Steve Jobs wearing a bad 1970's era leisure suit announcing during a late night TV infomercial that "all things must go!" to clear the inventory and make way for a dazzling new product. That's the image that's popping into some folks' heads today (or at least mine), as word gets around that AT&T is reportedly sold out of the iPhone 3G.

Next Monday, at the kick-off of WWDC 2010, Apple CEO Steve Jobs is expected to unveil the 4th generation iPhone. Chance are, you've heard about this by now. What you may have not yet heard, however, is information contained in a report this morning that was gleaned from a leaked internal memo from AT&T asserting that inventories of the 8GB iPhone 3G is completely depleted.

According to the BGR today, "You had a really, really good run iPhone 3G. We’ll miss you." While it wouldn't make sense to mass produce and stock the iPhone 3G so close to a next-gen product launch, the timing of the depletion suggests the likely marketplace arrival of the new iPhone is imminent. That is, the 4th generation iPhone could begin turning up in Apple and AT&T stores in weeks rather than months. And given what feels to have been an exorbitant wait time for this latest iPhone roll out, that's music to the ears of many Apple fans waiting to upgrade or delve into the iPhone market for the first time.

Industry expectations now widely reflect the notion that the iPhone 3G will be permanently discontinued, with the $99 iPhone slot likely getting filled with 2009's iPhone 3GS.

two years is a LONG CONTRACT when they put new phones out every 11.5 months. Even legit ATT users don't want to be locked to their contracts. I paid $655.00 cash for my iPhone 32 3GS at an apple store because I knew the next phone comes out, I'm buying it. Fuck waiting 2 years under a contract locked subsidized phone. I've been with ATT since day one of the 1st gen.

Apple dropped support for the 2G completely. 3.1.3 is the final firmware for the 2g so when the apps start rolling out in the store requiring 4.0 FW to be playing that game......... you either buy a 3G or you own a phone that can only play old ass games forever. In the apple store you will get a message that says "this phone not eligible for this app upgrade".

Specifically:

Although OS 4.0 is available for everyone in the summer, not every feature will work with every model. Specifically background applications.

If you have the 3GS or the 3rd generation iPod Touch, all the features of OS 4.0 will work, including multitasking. If you have an iPhone 3G or the 2nd gen iPod Touch, you can install OS 4.0 but you won’t get multitasking.

As for those you you who own the original iDevices (2G iPhone or 1st gen iPod Touch), there was no mention of OS 4 compatibility for these models. Although when questioned, Steve Jobs said this:

The old devices will get the update, but they’ll miss some of these features like multitasking. If that’s an incentive for them to upgrade to a new device…terrific.

Basically you will get nothing from 4.0, you just get 3.1.3 with the compatibility of 4.0 apps, but the apps won't run on the phone because you can't run the multitasking so as I said before NO 4.0 firmware or support for the 2g.

The 2g was usurped by the 3g in a short period of time, the 3g was usurped by the 3gs within one year, and the 3gs is being usurped by the iPhone HD within the same one years span... That is not even counting the numerous other phones with hardware that easily surpasses the 3gs's hardware. What on earth makes you think that this is not a growing trend?

Will the hardware last? Yes. Will it be of use, god no. Hell, the 3g is already slowed down by the current OS.
