View Full Version : Would you buy a mechless HU?

My JVC deck's usb connector is starting to crap out on me, so it's time for an upgrade. I want something with decent SQ and have been looking at the Kenwood KDC-X994 (http://www.kenwood.ca/Car_Entertainment/CD_Receivers/KDC-X994) I went to the local dealer and they were steering me towards the KIV-BT900 (http://www.kenwood.ca/Car_Entertainment/Digital_Media_Receivers/KIV-BT900).

Why would a mechless deck with a similar feature set be $100 more?

Depends on whether or not youll ever use CDs. I hardly ever do.

And its $100 more because of the full color screen. ooh, pretty.

The thing I just found out that sucks though is with the X994 it's DAC does the work from an ipod, on the BT900 it uses the ipod's DAC. Not sure how much of adifference that would make. I haven't had a CD in my car for over a year now, everything is on thumb-drives because the JVC won't recognize my ipod.

I've got a Pioneer PRS880 I'll gladly sell you. If you know anything about SQ units.. this is a nice one.

That is a nice HU, any idea if it'll play nice with a 2 gen ipod touch? How much?

Depends on how you hook it up. With the adapter like I got you need an adapter to charge it, but it will still play perfectly.

Hmm... what adapter is that? One of the reasons I like the KDC-X994 is I can use the cable that came with my ipod for everything. BT is a nice addition as well.

I don't think I can get a double din in my dash..... I suppose I could velcro it to the top of the dash.

I have a DNX-8120 and the Ipod playback is great. Overall not bad. But still resort back to CD's when I actually want SQ. Since your not truly going to get that out of your Ipod.

Nah, I think they're a great idea, it's just that having a full-blown PC gives so much more flexibility :) Like buying a receiver vs. separates, you're locked into whatever electronics they give you in the box.

But sound quality-wise, nothing wrong with it as long as it's playing lossless files...
