So I have a 2000 watt rms sub that ill be reconing in a week and its on a 1000 watt amp, seems to me like my gain should be all the way up. What's the worst that could happen, blow my sub that I'm reconing in a week?

JimJ
06-30-2010, 02:29 PM
:lolwut:

Just because it's rated for a certain power level, doesn't make it a "2000 watt" sub...you can hit Xmech with half that if your enclosure is large enough.

We're missing a crucial piece of info here - your preout voltage.

yeah but if the amp pushes only 1000w, it's not going to hurt a 2000w rms sub. Man that's twice the power.

Idk bros you need to educate me, I thought having the gain way up could only hurt the sub not amp and the only damage it could do to the sub would be fixed with the recone :wat:

KILLING me man, KILLING me!

No, you cannot just crank the gains to max because the sub can handle it. The amp will, most likely, be damaged. You have to adjust your gains based on a particular formula (search gain setting tutorial) or by ear.

Clipping is just as bad on a speaker as power can be.

JimJ
06-30-2010, 02:41 PM
Clipping is power ;)

Go and google clipping.
What I remember about clipping is you get a square wave and such, but my sub should be able to handle it you know.
This better be a troll, I expect more out of you.

Why? This is what happens when you have 8000 posts on a car audio forum but they are all iin the lounge

Shorted coils can do damage to an amplifier. It depends on the protection circutry of the amp.

I would think you would have at least read SOMETHING on the actual forum (ca.com).

pl8er

Clipping is a form of waveform distortion that occurs when an amplifier is overdriven and attempts to deliver an output voltage or current beyond its maximum capability. Driving an amplifier into clipping may cause it to output power in excess of its published ratings.

Set the gain 50% and leave bass boost off.... maybe 65% dependent on your HU's pre-out voltage

The amp can produce full power no matter where the gain knob is set, so I'm not exactly sure what you mean by that.

I'm just trying to learn, I figured my amp would go into protect if it was being pushed to hard and not burst into flames.

Just don't max it out. You'll start clipping the amp and the sub. The sub will take it but will do it's damage. The amp will do it and do damage to itself as a well. Why do you think people blow amps at competitions? Not just cause they decide to crap out but their being pushed to and even above their limits. The amp will do it w/o going into protect until it blows feta or caps or something then it'll go into protect.

Porch Monkey

If you want maximum DBZ, you need to get a preamp, turn that to max and after that set your amp to max...only way to really get the total amount out of everything.
