View Full Version : What am I doing wrong? (Hooking up 360 to HT)

Ok, so I am not a professional when it comes to Home Theater systems, but I also don't consider myself an idiot.

I am trying to hook my 360 up to our relatively new HT system, and cannot get any fucking video.

I am hooking it up to the receiver using the 5 cables so it is HD, red green blue, and then the red and white for audio. I hooked them all up to the corresponding "DVD in" places. RGB for the HD, and the RW for audio.

I am getting audio just fine, but can't get video for the life of me. I also noticed that all of our other components use the single HDMI cable setup to connect to the receiver.

Is there something not connected from the receiver to my TV so I am not getting video? Why is all of my other shit connected in some different, crazy way?

As you can probably tell, I didn't install this originally, so I am somewhat clueless.

Thanks for any help.

Your TV needs to be connected to a video out of some sort. Usually through HDMI. It sounds like the signal is going the other way. (TV--Receiver).

So I need another cord from my receiver to my TV even though all of my other shit (DVD player, blu-ray, etc..) works and gets video? They can't use the same out from receiver to tv?

Is you reciever capable of upconverting analog signal to digital. Sounds like that's your problem. How old is the reciever?

Ok, so I looked at the back of my TV and it just has one HDMI cable into the back of it, but we can get video for our dvd player, blu-ray, cable/dvr, and all of that shit, but my xbox doesn't get video.

Could there be some box that everything is plugged into so it goes out through that HDMI cable? I'm not really sure how this "Out" stuff works.

My xbox uses the 5 cables, but these other components are using the single HDMI cable. Could that difference be the issue?

Nope you reciever is very capable of sending the signal out of a single hdmi. Take a pic of the back of the reciever for us and I will tell you what is wrong.

I will try. It is tucked nicely in our wall unit and I've been using a hand mirror and a flashlight to plug in my cables LOL

I put the receiver on "V-Aux" and had no luck. I'm also assuming my TV should be on HDMI 3, which is what all of my other components work on. Although I do try all of the other sources as well.

Is a hdmi piece of equipment hooked up in the hdmi/DVD input already?

mackin
07-10-2010, 07:54 PM
It must be. Can you see the HDMI cable in the third picture? I think that says DVD in there.

I should note that I tried my HDMI cables in both the "DTV/Cable" and now the "DVD" slots. Now that you mention it, I am assuming both of those are already taken by an HDMI cord.

Does that sound right?

Yep when you hit the DVD button on the reciever it might be looking hdmi. Why not go buy a 10 buck hdmi cord and make it simple for you.

The one I've seen for xbox is like 50 bucks :crap: Could I hook it up to another set of RGB/RW that isn't already being used?

Also, if I did get an HDMI cord for it, is there another DVD in slot for me to use?

Receivers have assignable video inputs... you more than likely need to go into the menu and assign the correctly labeled component input to the correct assigned location in the receiver itself...

It looks like the only other option is DVR, which is also already in use by an HDMI cable or else by the RWY cords. I need to go check.

Now I need to figure out a way for my receiver to try to find the RGB inputs or something.

It looks like there are only 2 HDMI in ports, both of which I believe are in use. The DVR is also hooked up, but it must be with the Yellow Red White situation.

All of the RGB options are open, but they are DVD, DTV/Cable, and DVR. All of those are plugged in to other types.

Idk wtf to do now.

It's fucking easy, on receivers ALL of the inputs are user assignable.

Pick up the remote, hit menu, and look for video or inputs....

You just need to assign the correct component input to something that isn't being used.

Let's say I have a Logitech Harmony remote, how do I do something like this? Same way?

This but I did not want to even guess how to do it on yammy receiver.

I have the same thing, except I don't have a Yamaha receiver.

Too annoying/difficult to change menu setting correctly with the Harmony. So either get the stock yamaha remote off, or do it at the receiver itself with the hardware buttons on the front face while looking at the TV...

Does the 663 have a Osd GUI ?

Just found the remote for the receiver. I'm going to try fucking around on that for a little bit and see what happens.

If anyone knows how to do it, I would love to hear from you lol.

I think I might be on the right track. I got the video working. I set V-Aux to use the DVD Component (A) and now my video works, but no sound lol.

I think I need to do the same thing except for the sound now. I will report back.

Thanks for the help guys. If I get this working it's gonna be great.

mackin
07-10-2010, 09:03 PM
Ok nevermind. I have no clue what happened to my sound.

I have the RGB plugged into DVD, which is A. I changed V-Aux to use the components A. Now I get video with no sound. My sound component cables are plugged into DVD. Is there a way to change where my sound comes from on V-Aux?

mackin
07-10-2010, 09:09 PM
I am about to go nuts. I even changed the DVD input to recognize (A) as the component video source, and it gets no signal, but of course, it gets sound then.

I am at an absolute loss on what to do now. I can get video with no sound, or sound with no video. ALL I FUCKING WANT ARE BOTH AT THE SAME TIME! FUCK!

/rant

any ideas?

mackin
07-10-2010, 09:28 PM
Well fuck me in the ass, it works.

However, I had to change the HDMI recognition for the DVD Input to "None", so I hope nobody wants to watch any DVD's without my xbox. Or I guess I could always change it back everytime I'm done playing.

Jesus.

Thanks for the help everyone.

enlighten me. I had the input "DVD" set to work on component A, as well as Optical 1 and HDMI 1.

It didn't work set as that, and idk what else it could be set as for it to work.

If your 360 has HDMI out, I would use that. Problem solved. HDMI1 = Xbox = Yamaha DVD input. Then use HDMI2 = Cable Box = Yamaha CBL input.

You don't need a dedicated DVD player as the 360 plays DVD's. Problem solved.

If not, then use component for video and optical for audio out the the Xbox 360. I would use Component C = Xbox = Yamaha DVR input. Then use Optical 1 = Xbox = Assign to Yamaha DVR. In this case, you'll leave the Cable box, and DVD on the existing inputs as labeled.

WOWZERS.
